We live Olney theater. Each theater has the size of a small community theater, while having the production value of some of the best theaters in the area. We have been searching for a theater we would love for life and I think we’ve found it.
We love the Olney theater outdoor series. So many great cover bands and it feels good to support local artists. Live the drag and drinks series. It’s just a fun atmosphere once we get past parking and to the venue.
We also love the size of the indoor theater and the elevators that allow for accessibility on the inside.
The ticket and security staff are super friendly and nice.
Small Wish for Improvement: there was more vending/food options, especially outside.
They NEED a lot more handicapped parking, even if they have temporary handicapped parking. Telling people with mobility issues to park on the grass is dangerous and misses that people with mobility issues can’t safely navigate uneven terrain that has foreign objects in it, like rocks and sticks. Also, staff will argue and say, “just ride the shuttle. If people with mobility issues could navigate the large stairs of a shuttle, they probably wouldn’t have mobility issues. Overall, for a theater that has many old people with mobility issues as their primary patrons, the culture is ablist, dismissive, and fails to even try to understand or correct their dangerous practices. Nothing a lawsuit or two won’t fix, for sure, but that would likely put the theater out of business. They should just designate 2-3 rows for handicapped parking in the back of the building when they have...
Read moreThis once-unknown community playhouse has become a major regional theatre hosting sell-out shows like Christmas 2019's Singin' in the Rain. I received tickets from my wonderful wife for the family to see the December 28th show, and noticed that all of the shows are SOLD OUT through the end of its run in late January. Be on the alert for an extension if you want to see this super show; OTC regularly extends popular productions several weeks.
Singin' features the very capable Rhett Guter as Don Lockwood, who playfully kicks the REAL RAIN into the front row during the immortal title tap number, Farrell Parker as Lina Lamont, complete with overbearing superiority complex and grating nasal voice straight from the movie ("Am I dumb or somethin' '" and "...and I kent sten 'em!"), and Jacob Scott Tischler as Cosmo Brown, whose tap dance mastery steals the show.
Go enjoy SOMETHING at the Olney Theatre Center - you'll be glad you...
Read moreWell the production of Kinky Boots was very professionally done but we in the furthest back row to the side could not understand the speech. 2 of us 4 wear hearing aids but none of us could understand more than a few words here and there. It was not an issue of volume which was very high (and the headphones the hearing loss 2 got from the front desk were useless as they only amplified the already loud sound and did not fit well enough to screen out background noise). We returned them at the intermission. The audience in this matinee at least was mostly seniors so we couldn’t have been the only ones not following the narrative. Having some captioned performances is highly recommended.. Our seating choice was not good either but we learned that...
