Call ahead! I was on a solo drive coming down from Eagle Harbor, so I had timed it perfectly to make the last tour of the day, according to the Historical Society's website. Unfortunately, the website was not up to date, and when I arrived, I found the "last tour" of the day had been two hours previous. Apparently, September is "winter hours." The lighthouse is located on land owned by some chemical industry with an covenant with the historical society, so you can't see the lighthouse without a "tour" and special shuttle bus to the site. If you drive up on your own, it's a locked gate and you can't see anything. The best views without a tour are from across the channel near the Gitchee Gumee gift shop (recommended). There's a dilapidated concrete path by the water that goes out to get this view. It was disappointing to have rushed so far and fast to have the information be out of date. And then we took the spiral stairs to the top of the lighthouse. For anyone who enjoys history and lighthouses, it was definitely worth it. Even if it wasn't the most extravagant one I've seen, sometimes good things come in smaller packages. Ontonogan Lighthouse is a...
Read moreIf you can’t go between the hours of 11-3 you won’t get a good view of this lighthouse. We came early in the morning (8am) as we were visiting all of the lighthouses in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Unfortunately the gate is locked and there is currently no good spot to view the lighthouse as the beach across the river is currently closed as well. We finally found a spot in the distance where there was a fence up on a closed river walk due to washout where we could get a photo for our book but it was a very distant view. Plan according to museum hours if you want up close...
