I spent a good part of the day at the Maynard Dixon living history museum in Mt Carmel. The Dixon living history museum is a elegant south western museum. With many new SW Artists represented. As a profession photographer who admired Ansel Adams images and was friends with Maynard Dixon. The photographs on display this spring 2019 at the museum is first rate. The exhibit in the museum from the Hiller & Powell expedition is an amazing collection of early photographs of the native people of that time.
116 original albumen photographs by Jack Hiller from the 1872 John Wesley Powell Expedition. Executed between 1872 and 1875, these images depict native Americans in the region surrounding the base camp of Powell in Kanab,Utah and the surrounding areas of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Northern Nevada and areas along the Wasatch front.
From a historical perspective this southwest museum should not be missed if what to learn more about the history...
Read moreAfter driving past dozens of times we finally had time to stop. The owner of the gallery is a wonderful host and expert on Maynard Dixon's art, as well as contemporary painters of southwest scenery. If you want to find an original Maynard Dixon, she would be the person to contact.
The original home and homestead is an amazing look into Maynard Dixon's life and the community he created. It is lovingly restored and maintained. The structures he and his wife, Edith Hamlin, designed and built are beautiful and fascinating, with a studio inspired by aspects of Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West. The views from the memorial to the hill are amazing and worth the walk. The whole experience was well worth the donation ($20/person at the time...
Read moreThe Thunderbird Foundation For The Arts is continuing Maynard Dixon's love of the area and arts. The art gallery hosts several different shows throughout the year. They currently have John K. Hiller's Utah Tribes Photo Exhibit. It has very old photos of the Indians from the area. The wrap around porch with its rocking chairs and beautiful view begs you to sit and relax after visiting the show. They also offer artist symposiums if you are an interested artist. I plan on returning regularly and recommend this day trip for the historical information and to understand why Maynard Dixon chose this area for his summer retreats from Tucson. This quaint spot is located just North of the Mt Carmel, Utah...
