An experience at a winery can make all the difference as to whether you care or not about the wine. One visit to meet Dave and Sara and Bells Up and you will fall in love. I'm talking full on dopamine flowing and giddiness because these folks tell a great story, and take you on their journey right along with them. So you're rooting for this winery... you're impressed with the fact that they uprooted themselves from their mid-western lives, quitting "real" jobs to take a flyer on a dream and moving to this stunning valley to make it happen. And there it is, manifested in front of you...in their happy faces, in your glass... and you FEEL it. Get me a T-shirt!!! I'm a believer!!! The wines are great...fantastic even...with a selection of wonderful varietals and blends that you'd expect in the Willamette Valley, yet somehow, richer, fuller, more interesting. These wonderful wines are a glorious sum of their parts.... passion, determination, expertise, interest, fun, struggle, determination, hope, joy and love...for the love the wine and the sharing it inspires. Really good stuff. Visit Bells Up!!! For this is what dreams are made of.

You sit 1:1 with the actual winemaker and have a chat about wine, life, business, whatever. It’s like sitting down with that one super knowledgeable friend, having a chat and them casually (and not in a weird way) dropping wine and life knowledge on you. Yes, life knowledge. Dave is charming, introspective, and so passionate about his work. Oh, and the wine. THE WINE. I loved the intention behind every wine they create. Each wine is unique, but they are also working hard to create a space in Pinot country to show visitors that Oregon can produce incredible wines from other varietals with the right brains and palate behind it. No easy feat they are accomplishing. If you call and think this place seems exclusive, it’s because it is! This is the winery that the “in the know” wine folks make a point to visit.

Visiting Bells Up Winery is like visiting friends. And not just any friends, but friends who are knowledgeable, generous, welcoming, and always have great wine. In other words: the best kind of friends. Chatting with winemakers Dave and Sara while taking in that beautiful pastoral view and sipping on their diverse but carefully curated and consistently delightful wines… you can’t help but sigh with contentment. Their story, and their wine, make you believe that dreams can come true. (With, of course, talent, passion, and a heck of a lot of hard work.) But while you’ll appreciate the labor of love that has made their dreams a reality, a visit to Bells Up winery is relaxed, unhurried, and just oh so pleasant. It is something to be savored. Much like a glass of their New World Reserve Cab.

I have been waiting to visit Bells Up for years & I finally got to go! Everything was as wonderful as I expected and then some. Dave and Sara are both so kind and knowledgeable, and the wine is some of the best I’ve ever tasted. I’m a horn player so I was particularly excited about the pairing of wine + music, but the experience is universal and would be enjoyed by anybody, musician or not. I cannot recommend a visit to Bells Up enough! I can’t wait to visit again soon and am officially a proud Fanfare member. :)

UPDATE: Bells Up continues to be the best! I brought a bottle of the Jupiter wine to Thanksgiving and everyone was a fan. Even those who don't usually drink reds loved it, and we listed to the Holst movement while sipping. My whole family is now in love with Bells Up--while I wasn't able to join the recent harvest, my mom and sister were, and they had nothing but great things to say about getting to be a part of the winemaking process. My sister was kind enough to send me the t-shirt and I wear it with pride & a hope I get to join in on the...

The Perfect Small Winery Experience My family enjoys wine tasting week ends. But we also prefer the experience of the small winery to the large and more famous ones. At the latter the tasting experience is highly choreographed with a server bringing each round of wine and spilling out a canned spiel about each. At the small wineries we get to meet and talk with the winemaker himself or herself. And the wines are equally good. Bells Up provides an excellent experience. David and Sara are friendly hosts and love conversing casually about wines, winemaking, and the Willamette Valley. They build their customer base (as well as a loyal local volunteer support group) by building friendships. We live in Wisconsin but get out to Oregon at least once a year to see our daughter and son in law. We include a week end in the Willamette Valley and a stop at Bells Up each time. We enjoy trying out the new wines and leave with a few. My daughter and her husband are case...
