92343 Fort Clatsop Rd, Astoria, OR 97103
If you love history, adventure, or just the sheer magic of the Pacific Northwest, Fort Clatsop is an absolute must-visit. This is where Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery hunkered down for the winter of 1805-1806, enduring months of relentless rain after their grueling journey to the Pacific. And let me tell you, standing where these explorers once stood hits different when you’re basking in rare January sunshine, which, lucky for me, was the case!
The replica fort itself is incredibly well done, giving you a real sense of what life was like for the expedition. You can almost hear the crackle of the fire, feel the damp chill they must have endured, and imagine Sacagawea and her baby navigating the muddy grounds. Park rangers, dressed in period clothing, bring history to life with fascinating stories and demonstrations.
But beyond the history, the setting is breathtaking. Towering trees, lush moss draping over branches like nature’s own artwork, and trails that lead you right into the heart of the old-growth forest. I could hear the distant call of birds, the rustling of leaves, and for a moment, it felt like I had stepped back in time.
If you’re in Astoria, don’t skip this gem. It’s a place where history meets nature, and for just a moment, you can feel what it was like to stand at the edge of the unknown, just like Lewis and Clark did over...
Read moreThis was one of my favorite things on my entire vacation to the area. First of all, incredible recreation of the original fort. I didn’t even realise that they hadn’t just preserved the original! It was so well built. There were also a couple presentations that I saw, the “Doctor, Doctor!” Presentation and “Lewis’s Astonishing Weapon” (that’s what I think they were called at least…) and both were interesting and very informative, keeping the listener interested with expressive speech and interesting tidbits. I also listened to a small presentation that took place inside the recreation of the captains’ cabin, which was super interesting as well. I loved how everyone giving the presentations was in costume to fit the time period. It’s also a beautiful walk, just walking around the trails in the area.
The visitors center had very nice restrooms and a cool museum, it was one of the nicer visitors centers that I’ve encountered. The gift shop was also very nice and organised, and I got a really cute hoodie. There were a lot of magnets, stickers, and far more there too that were neat to see.
100% recommend you go here,...

very well informed staff, answered literally all my questions even the tough ones. Love the costumes and the re-enactors. Would love more information about the clatsop, the tillamook, chinook etc.
would love more information about explorations of the area by spanish, british, hudson bay etc and maybe some of the other explorers immediately post L&C like Ogden and Pike, how did all of their explorations compare to L&C. Love maps and timelines...
