We loved learning about cranberry farming from Dave at the Cape Cod Cranberry Bog Tour. He has been growing and farming cranberries since the 1980’s. Dave knows the history as well as the current state of the cranberry industry. We learned about the original indigenous people who grew and harvested cranberries for food, medicine, and dying fabrics. Now we know that cranberries are harvested differently for craisens, canned cranberries, and whole cranberries. It’s a year round arduous process and takes a lot of work and TLC to grow delicious cranberries. Depending on the time year you visit you will find different stages in the cranberry farming cycle. Blooming season, when the flowers come out, is around June 21st. Then the bees are released to pollinate the flowers. The cranberries are in full growth spurt in the summer. Then they are ready for harvest in October which is when we’d like to visit again! Thanks Dave for your passion for cranberry farming and sharing with us the secrets of the...
Read moreWe took this tour last week and it was amazing. Dave who is the owner of the bog gave us such an informative and fun experience. His directions for getting to the bog was perfect . From the minute we got there and started this walking tour I knew it was going to be terrific. So much information in growing cranberries and you will never look at a cranberry the same way again. You really appreciate all the work these farmers do to bring this beautiful product to our tables. Dave explained how the process works and how they harvest the cranberries. It was great being out in the fresh air touring the bogs. Everyone went home with a package or two of cranberries. Dave even showed our group the tools that were used in the earlier days of harvesting. I highly recommend this Tour!! Next year we would love to be there when they wet harvest. When available you can take that tour too with waders and all!! Thanks Dave !!! You were the...
Read moreIt is important to know that this is not a tour. Nor is it really an opportunity to watch an actual harvest in action. It is a 45 minute talk from a cranberry bog owner while standing in place the whole time. In our 'tour', he then drove a cranberry machine for about 10 minutes that cuts the berries from their stems and we got to watch. Interesting, but not what was expected or explained to us. I'm giving 1 star because Dave personally confirmed this was a 'tour' when we called in advance, but that's not what this is. He also made it sound like the 'harvest' was a team of people all working on the bog during the 'tour'. But nobody was working, it was just him and his son on site. The $15/person price, however, was accurate and felt quite steep for what this was...a talk. If you go into this knowing it is simply a cranberry expert sharing his expertise, and that is what you're looking for,...
