Read moreScenic and Smart 17-Mile Drive by Uber
We visited Monterey using public transportation, without a car or international license. Since early morning and evening rides tended to be more expensive, we scheduled the trip for mid-morning when prices were lower. By planning the route with ChatGPT and entering it into the Uber app, we arranged a round trip from our hotel through the entire 17-Mile Drive and back for just $51. Since we were two people, it came to about $26 each—much cheaper than tours or rental cars. Our driver was a Monterey local, very familiar with the area. He kindly stopped at scenic spots like Pebble Beach Resort, the famous Cypress Point, dramatic coastlines, towering trees, and unique mansions. We especially loved the view at the Lone Cypress. We thought there might be a toll, but the driver explained something at the gate, and it was waived. Highly recommend this option for visitors without a car! (Visited...

I was thinking it'd be packed elbow to elbow and you would have to wait your turn to get a picture of it, like McWay Falls or Bixby Bridge, but that was not the case. It's also in a nicely shaded part of the 17-mile drive so even on the hottest day's like the day I was there, it was 90F or so, it still felt nice and cool. Also, the tree is a lot closer to the road in person that even from the road I had to use a pretty wide angle on my lens to get the tree with the entire vista in background as you are used to seeing everywhere. There is a trail you can take to get closer but probably not worth the effort because then all you'll end up with in your picture is a tree which will look like any other tree. Oh and for those complaining about the small fee it's free if you ride a bicycle and as a bonus to keep your...
