I’ve always been drawn to old buildings, but something about this place felt like stepping back in time. And I’m so grateful that Marta Beckett poured so much heart and effort into restoring the Amorgosa Hotel and Opera House #historic #deathvalley #ca #haunted #ghosttown

The historic district basically amounts to a hotel, the opera house, an abandoned cafe and a similarly out of business gas station. And yet, the whispers of those who have gone on longer in the air. The hotel is part motel, part museum, part restaurant, and part cultural centre for the area. It has seen better days in terms of cracking paint and faded walls but perhaps adds to, rather than subtracts from, the nostalgic charm. The abandoned buildings are worth a view as are the abandoned equipment in the hotel "lawn". The greatest attraction is certainly the amazing opera house. It speaks of a time when Death Valley Junction was a thriving cultural centre, not so long ago. There is something hauntingly sad and poetic and beautiful and moving about the land slowly being reclaimed by the desert. Pro Tip Death Valley Junction lacks much in the way of facilities so bring a good supply of supplies as needed, even if you stay in the hotel, which I highly recommend.

This town is nearly empty, but not quite a ghost town. The Amargosa Opera Opera House is here, along with the Amargosa Hotel which appears to be open. The Amargosa Cafe is closed and there are no other businesses, basically a stop for a couple quick photos and that's aboutAmaegosa can't enter the Opera House and posted No Trespassing nearby. Abandoned Service Station across the street.

The Death Valley Junction Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980.

An historic marker reads:

This historic crossroad has been used by Indians, Clampers, Death Valley 49ers, ranchers, farmers, settlers and tourists.

The town was originally called Amargosa. In 1907, the name was changed to Death Valley Junction. At this junction, the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad connected with the Las Vegas - Tonopah Railroad to service the Ryan and Lilac C. Borax Mines near Ryan during the years 1914 - 28.

Death Valley Junction had rail service until 1940. At it's [sic] peak, the town had a population of 300.

Today, the town is on the National Register of Historic Places.
