There is a giant parking area on both sides of the road. Amazingly the parking is often full. Luckily not everyone hikes up Mill D. Many go hiking on the other side of the road to Donut Falls. The Mill D Trail is steep and rocky. Hiking into a beautiful forest is the most common activity, but strong, fit, experienced mountain bikers can ride up it, probably walking in a few sections. A lot of mountain bike riders ride down this trail from The Wasatch Crest. This area is excellent moose habitat. The chance of seeing a moose is good. I have been on the trail twice in the last week. Anyway, the hike to Desolate Lake took us 4 hours round trip, plus some time at the lake. Trail is marked well and well worn. As reported, bikers abound and not necessarily the most careful with forewarning of their presence. Dog Lake is 2.6 miles from the trailhead, completed a roundtrip hike in 2.5 hours at a fast pace with moderate elevation gain. Trail is well maintained, and after 0.5 miles is completely distanced from human impact. Beautiful aspen groves, great views, and the lake is a solid stopping point, although smaller than some of the other more popular alpine lakes...
