I'm giving this two stars due to the recent and ongoing deforestation & clear cutting of the park. For those of you unaware a large quantity of the parks trees are being removed due to root rot, at least that's what the "official" reason is. I had spoken to a park official prior to the slaughter (yes, it really is that bad) and he mentioned the city/county were concerned a tree could fall on someone and hold the city/county responsible. By clearing the effected trees out the attorneys could now state in court that they had done "due diligence" and should no longer be held liable.
What was once a natural setting is now a scene of utter devastation. Gone are the trails and the natural beauty of the forest and in it's place are bulldozer tracks, tree stumps and a flattened landscape. All the bushes and undergrowth mentioned here in the previous comments are now gone in about a third of the park. It seems like more than a third as (easily) 75% of the trails that I (and others) used to hike in are now gone. I can only imagine what its doing to the wildlife critters that populate the park. It can't be positive for them.
I have no idea what the park will look like when they are finished destroying it but it will be impossible to resemble what took nature many years to nurture and grow. Perhaps in 50 years it will come back but maybe by then the park will be gone and in its place will be housing developments and a strip mall with a Starbucks. Port Orchard could always use another Starbucks after all.
I would invite members of the local media (Kitsap Sun, Port Orchard Independent) to check it out for themselves and report on it. It is clear in my opinion that this isn't about root rot but more so to harvest the trees. I would hope a reporter from the local media would 'follow the money' to get to...
Read moreMy home is 500' from the park. The Neighborhood dynamics since that place was put in, Has changed from 25/27 homes, And the street where you could leave your garage door wide open and be gone out of town for a week and nobody would touch anything in your house at this point there's probably 7 out of those 25 ish homes that have for sale signs on my home's been broken into 3 times my son's truck has been broken into 2 more times, I wanna stand guard out there at night with a shotgun There's every kind of trash in the world the cuts through from the cul-de-sac to the To the West Toward the park 24-7. The county continues to improve the grounds softball fields is soccer field without a doubt the best skateboard park I've ever seen, lots of trails, lotsa walkers lotsa dogs....but NO SUPERVISION/SECURITY!! It is open 24-7. I am sure without a doubt it's lowered the property values significantly with in probably a 1/2 a mile or more in all directions. Of course are some good things to it, its a great place during the day....events Such as Easter Egg hunts and those kinds of community issues & events draw large crowds, AND police presence... Which is totally unavailable from...
Read moreI have been going to this park for years & i have taken my son on to this park since he was a toddler. It has just improved over the years. My family has a few different favorite local parks that we enjoy on a regular basis & this is one of them. I love the Surrounding nature of this park & it's beautiful. It's a huge park with lots to do. The playground recently just got a nice new updated addition added to the play equipment & it's soooooo... Awesome & all the kids love it. Plus you have a ton of swings, slides, climbing & spinning toys with a toddler area. It has a nice patio with picnic tables & a shelter over them. You have trails to go and explorer in & there is bathrooms if absolutely needed. I try to avoid the bathrooms at all cost there cuz they are yucky & never clean but it's also very dim lighting & unfortunately you can tell it had been vandalized at some point. It's not pretty but it does the job! The Kitsap live streamers train ride is at this park as well &...
