My wife and I recently had the pleasure of visiting Mission Point Lighthouse during our Lake Michigan road trip adventure, and it was an absolute highlight! As passionate photographers, our mission was to capture the beauty of lighthouses along our journey, and Mission Point Lighthouse did not disappoint.
The lighthouse itself is a charming piece of Michigan history, nestled at the north end of a scenic drive through cherry orchards and vineyards. It may no longer guide mariners, but it now guides curious souls like us into the past, offering a glimpse of life from a bygone era.
The staff and volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing our experience with fascinating stories about the lighthouse's history. We even had the chance to climb all the way up to the tower for breathtaking views of the surrounding area. It's a photographer's dream come true!
We also explored the park's unspoiled trails, enjoyed picnicking, and soaked in the stunning sunset views. The beach and hiking trails are perfect for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike.
The gift shop is a treasure trove for lighthouse enthusiasts, offering a wide range of exclusive lighthouse-related souvenirs. Don't forget to check out the unique snow globes!
As travelers and photographers, we're active on social media as Stray Compass Life, and we couldn't resist sharing our Mission Point Lighthouse experience with our followers. This place is a must-visit for anyone seeking history, natural beauty, and a touch of lighthouse magic.
We were pleased to support the mission of this lighthouse and gladly paid the admission fee, knowing it helps preserve this historical gem for future generations.
Whether you're a history buff, a photographer, or simply someone looking for a serene spot to unwind, Mission Point Lighthouse should be on your Lake Michigan itinerary. We hope to visit again soon!

Read moreNice drive from downtown Traverse City about 25 - 30 min depending on where you are in Traverse City. The lighthouse and outer buildings are a short walk from the parking lot on a ADA approved walking path. There are multiple Porta potties located at the start of the walking path with one being ADA approved. Access to the beach is just past the old historical house or down the stairs in front of the lighthouse. We did not see any ADA access down to the beach but there are great viewing areas from the lawn area. You can walk the grounds and there are plenty of areas to sit and take in the view. Past the old house are two picnic table and if I remember correctly two bbq grills(?). To walk the grounds and to go into the gift store is free but donations are appreciated. To go up to the top of the lighthouse there is a charge. Prices and times can be found on their website along with information about staying overnight in the lighthouse. Once again this is a free place to visit if you do not plan to go to the top of the lighthouse but we did leave a donation in the box outside. Dogs are welcome. The gift store is small and we did not see ADA access into the building, maybe call ahead if you need that information, the number is on their website. This was a nice stop and definitely worth visiting. *The tree's when entering the walking path are very interesting to look at. We have a full video of the area on our YouTube channel DestinationOpenRoad if you would like...
Read moreTook a trip to traverse city for our anniversary in October. While we were there we toured the city , took a drive to see the sights. We found the lighthouse online and decided to go take a look. The views were so beautiful! Fall is the perfect time to go and see all the changing of the colors. When you arrive it’s a dirt parking lot. You have to be careful when walking not to step in a hole. You walk down a path that has some porta potties. Then it branches off to a little cabin that has been on the property for many years. After that is the lighthouse , the beach. There were many steps to get down to the beach. After waking up a fight of steps to get inside the light house you enter to a door way that has a gift shop on one side ,and then a room with photos and information on the other. If you decide to you can pay to go up stairs, and see the rest of the light house. It is not handicapped accessible and the stairs are very step, and narrow. The gift shop offered several items you could purchase to remember your visit. After we toured the lighthouse we took a walk down to the shore. It’s was lined with shells and stones. It’s was a beautiful fell day so we were able to see pretty far. We really enjoyed the view. We will...
