My recent visit to Jack London State Historic Park was a journey back in time to the life and legacy of one of America's most renowned authors. Located in Glen Ellen, California, this park offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural exploration.
The park's landscape is simply breathtaking. From rolling hills and lush meadows to towering redwoods and meandering streams, the scenery is straight out of a storybook. Exploring the trails, I felt a sense of tranquility and wonder as I immersed myself in the pristine wilderness that inspired Jack London's writings.

Read moreI visited Jack London State History Park for the first time ( May/24/2021), as the park is now open. There's a $10 entrance fee and a $1 fee for a map. This park provides a lot of different activities: walking, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird watching, and unique photo opportunities for lots of pictures. In addition you can take it easy by picnicking and relaxing, while learning and enjoying nature. With lots of parking available, this beautiful park has 35 miles of hiking trails, beautiful scenery, and a Vineyard. The highlights of my trip was hiking up to the Pig Palace, (a very interesting place), the Lake Trail, and making it up to the Peak and back down. It was very steep, slippery, strenuous and adventurous. It is not suitable to all users. Distance was around 12 miles out and back, 1,934 ft of elevation gain. But what a beautiful forest and so wild. It was not busy even on the weekend, the views from the top were amazing, it was magnificent views of Sonoma Valley, San Pablo Bay and Mount Diablo. I also talked to a few staff members. All were super friendly and knowledgeable. If you like history and hiking, this is the place for you. Make sure to check out the House of Happy Walls Museum, (as that is where I learned all about Jack and his wife's history). The Wolf House Ruins (both definitely show stoppers). In addition there was Jack London's Grave, The Cottage House, (where Jack and his wife lived). Over all: The main attraction to this Park was certainly the man and legend—...
Read moreThis is a wonderful place. The setup works well for for kids, ADA access, hiking, biking and picnics. There is a mix of late 19th Century mansions, the ruins of same, working vinyards and forest trails. As a redwood fan, I was headed for the 1,800 year old "Grandmother" tree. The hike to the Ancient Tree was wonderful. The Lake trail is more of redwood trail. The lakes are mostly reeds and natural reforestation. By the time you get to the ancient tree, you've gone up and down a few hundred feet. Trails are moderate walks. Walks around the grounds are wheel chair friendly. Dogs are not allowed into the hiking areas, but are welcome on leash in the picnic and main buildings parts. There is a clear and accurate topo map posted at both parking lots and a few other places. Take a photo of it. There are at least 3 different aspects of Jack London. The adventure writer most of us know. The socialist activist that some of know. Few of us know the affluent man he was later in life. This park is mostly about the mansions. I asked for some of his socialist writings in the store and it took a while. This area was a playground for the wealthy a hundred years ago and is such still now. My son looked at my photos and asked me if I had driven (his) car to Europe. The town looks like Europe too, with a lot of tourist stuff carrying the Jack London brand. All the drives in and out are picturesque wine country roads. Bennet Vally Road to Santa Rosa is...
