My son and I hiked the trail to Chimney Top, and man oh man was it ever tough. Payoff was sensational view's and accomplishing the challenge. Make sure you're hydrated with not only water but electrolytes also. While my son is 26 and in tip top, I'm 66 and even though I walk alot it still didn't prepare me for this. But we...

🍂 Tackle one of West Virginia’s most breathtaking fall hikes- the Monongahela National Forest’s North Fork Mountain Trail in Grant County. Stretching 24 miles end-to-end, the 5.5-mile out-and-back section to Chimney Top rewards hikers with miles of sweeping views along a rugged rocky ridgeline- easily one of the best day hikes in the mountain state 💙⛰️💛 🥾 Expect a strenuous climb with nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain, but every step unveils jaw-dropping overlooks and fiery fall color panoramas. For mountain bikers, the technical downhill sections are pure adrenaline 🚴 💧Water sources are scarce along the ridge, so pack extra water and follow Leave No Trace ethics, especially if camping ⛺️ 🚙 Only a 3 hours drive from D.C. the North Fork Mountain Trail puts you within striking distance of other incredible national forest, destinations, including Seneca Rocks, Smoke Hole Canyon, and Dolly Sods Wilderness 🌲 🏘️ The historic town of Petersburg makes an ideal basecamp — grab a latte at Grove Coffee Shop, browse South Side Studios Art Gallery, and explore Fort Mulligan Civil War Battlefield before or after your hike. ##westvirginia##mountainviews##fallhikes

Just 3 hours drive from the DMV, this is hands down my favorite part of West Virginia! It’s beautiful, it’s FULL of outdoor adventures, and it’s SO underrated. My recommendations for the perfect summer road trip are focused in and around Davis, but just a heads up the drive between places can be up to an hour because there aren’t many roads! ALL of this info + tons more are on my blog (Epic Weekend Road Trip Itinerary: Dolly Sods, WV) 👉🏼Which activity looks the most fun to you!? [📌SAVE for planning + tag your adventure pals!] 1. Hike in Dolly Sods Wilderness- one of the most unique areas in the country. I love the Red Creek Trail for all the waterfalls 2. See the sunrise at Bear Rocks Preserve- right at the northern entrance to Dolly Sods, no hiking required! 3. Hike Chimney Top via North Fork Mountain Trail- my favorite hike in WV, though a challenge for sure! 4. Visit Blackwater Falls State Park. Some must-see spots are: -Blackwater Falls (short hike) -Elakala Falls (short hike) -Pendleton point (no hiking) -Lindy Point (short hike) 5. Check out Douglas Falls- down a 4x4 road just outside the state park (continue on to Kennedy Falls) 6. Hike to the top of Seneca Rocks- OR, go climbing! Did you spot the climbers in the video? 7. Stay at Harman’s Log Cabins! We love this property and the all the opps to explore. @wvlogcabins 8. From Harman’s, hike into the National Forest for the coolest swimming hole… 9. Or just walk outside your cabin and plop a tube in the river! Peep @happilyeverexploring & @mindyonthemove who I’ve had to pleasure of adventuring here with! 🙋🏻‍♀️ ⛔️Please help preserve the beauty of WV by staying on established trails, disposing of all waste (even food scraps), respecting wildlife, and leaving what you find. Visit lnt.org for more info! ⛔️
