Beautiful hike with a 360 degree view of the city at the top. If you’re a novice hiker, 80% of the hike from the parking lot is paved but steep! Whenever I bring someone for the first time they comment on how fast you come up on the incline.

It’s mild cardio with a definite burn on the quads before you hit pavement. Great for training. A lot of locals like to run it.

You can hike the whole mountain from the 7th Avenue side to the 7th Street side. The 7th Avenue side is definitely a level up in intensity with hardly any people and not paved.

The 7th Street side has parking, picnic areas, a restroom, etc.

If you have a group, it’s fun to park two cars with one at the 7th Ave lot, and one in the 7th Street lot so you can hike the whole mountain from both sides.

Great for kiddos because most of it is paved! Lots of families.

Sunrise in the cooler months is spectacular and highly recommended!

Scramble is also a fun breakfast place to grab coffee afterwards down the street.

Be sure to touch the handprint sign at the top by the towers to say you made it!!😊

IMPORTANT I cannot stress the importance of having water when hiking in the summer months. Many of our popular hiking trails are closing from 11-5 due to excessive heat. Please please please go well stocked with hydration!

Good rule of thumb: One bottle of water to go up, and one bottle of water to go...

This trailhead is located at the second parking structure, from the first main parking lot. If you’re walking up from the first main parking lot, it’s an incline walk and then to the right to find Trail 44.

The first part of the trail is not paved, rocky, and a strenuous up hill hike.

You finally reach a paved section of the hike, which gives you photo ops. Although easier to keep your footing, this path continues to go up in elevation, until you reach the antennas. There is an opportunity to high five šŸ–ļø or keep going up an unpaved rocky trail to the tip top.

There’s a lot of traffic in and out of the park, but amble parking spots. Dog friendly, on leash, and so many chipmunks and squirrels in the area. I found the hike strenuous for a beginner hiker, but it’s a nice cardio challenge for a more experienced...

It was almost like a mini Camelback - at least the second half of the trail of North Mountain National Trail #44! Kids loved it, and we’d totally hike it again. 🄾bookmark and share for the weekend! 🄾 At 1.7 miles, this trail may not seem long, but it makes up for length with some intensity! We started with a short uphill climb, and then met up with a paved service road continuing up to the towers. There are several lookout points along the way too. At the towers, we stopped for snacks, then continued on the trail. This is where the fun began! We walked around the ridge top for about 0.2 miles, and had almost 360 degree views of the valley, so amazing. Those views were worth the total hike for sure. The scramble down took us some time. Our 4 year old did really well; we did have to hand her down a couple places, as the decent was steep. Our 8 and 11 year did great! So the full trail is possible with young children, but be prepared for rock scrambling and be safe. In retrospect, it would have been better to do the trail clockwise, starting with the rock scramble and ending with the paved path and short rocky decent. If you do this route, having the trail pulled up on AllTrails will definitely help as the rock scramble isn’t well defined. We currently have a paid version of the app, but we have also used the unpaid version and you can still view the trail on the map, just not track your progress. Another option is to just do the short uphill climb, continue to the towers, and then turn around. This would be about a mile round trip. North Mountain Park is located at 10600 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85020, and there is also a fabulous visitor’s center about a mile up on 7th Street. Double check hours online at https://northmountainvisitorcenter.org/ . The park is currently open 8am-7pm, and there are several restroom locations. However, during our visit, only the ones by the playground were open. The playground needs an update, but is functional and has slides, swings, etc. More great hikes coming your way in 2023, as we attempt the 52 Hikes challenge this year! (11 out of 52 done.)
