This hike on the Pheonix Mountain Preserve was spectacular. My partner scheduled this sunset hike with a guide through Air BNB on Tuesday night. The guide was Paul and he was very knowledgeable about the Preserves and the best place to see the sunset. The hike wasn't too back although it's not for beginners. Its not a paved trail at all and is actually the mountainside with many rocks. My partner and I have been hiking in the past and found this hike to be not to bad. We enjoyed the beautiful Cactus 🌵 and the setting sun. The guide talked to us about various plants and we hiked through the area. He even took pictures for us along the way.
The Pheonix Mountain Preserve was an amazing site to see as I've never seen a sunset off the mountain peak. I would definitely do this again and on my own. There were others hiking and biking we saw as we journeyed on the trails. There was ample parking on the street directly on front of the Pheonix Mountain Preserve. This hike is not wheelchair accessible, but one could wait at the base and still see an sunset. I didn't see any small children on this hike, but I did see some teens with an adult hiking along the path.
If you want to hike at the Pheonix Mountain Preserve be sure to wear sunscreen and take plenty of water and snacks. This was the...
Read moreClassic Phoenix hiking trailhead, popular spot for locals though nothing is spectacular about this part of the preserve. Dogs are allowed when temp is under 100 F but I wouldn't recommend taking your pup out here over 90, there's very little shade anywhere here in the warmer months.
The trails are pretty good for mountain biking if you know the right routes (Trail 100 and 1a are good options) though you can quickly run out of room for doing longer rides here unless you take the pretty gnarly Trail 100 under SR-51.
For hikers the trail from this parking lot to the top of 2 Bit Peak (roughly follows alignment of 40th st) can be quite congested at peak times but as you get further away from the trailhead it's easy to spread out on the numerous other trails here.
There's a variety of users at this trailhead: mountain bikers, hikers, runners, equestrians. Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings and to be courteous to other trail users.
This trail system also connects to the Piestewa Peak TH and Dreamy Draw TH if you wanted to do a longer loop with water stops.
Beware of Rattlesnakes anytime from March to October. I've seen them pretty much everywhere out here. Sneaky...
Read moreI left my very expensive collapsible black diamond hiking poles in the parking lot today Sunday Feb 21st. I went back but of course they were gone. If you found them please contact me. Other than that the hike was good. We took the quartz ridge trail. I wouldn't say it's easy to moderate I would say its closer to moderate. Very rocky. The views at the top are well worth the hike up even though it was very hot. I'm from Seattle so our trails are very shaded and we are always looking for the sun, here it was the exact opposite. No shade and wishing there was some on this unseasonably hot day in February. I was glad to have my poles coming back down but then I always am after more than my share of tailbone landings on slippery downhills. Unfortunately I fear my poles are long gone unless the person who picked them up reads this and finds it in their heart...
