Adding details since the owner asked for it. We came in as a party of three for my sisters birthday. She was in the bathroom and my friend and I were looking at the menu trying to decide how many tastings to order as she was the DD and I wasn’t sure my if my sister wanted a tasting or a glass. As we were talking amongst ourselves about it, a woman in a black dress behind the bar interjected pretty rudely “one tasting isn’t enough for three people” which yes we know but also one wasn’t drinking and we were waiting on the others input. We aren’t trying to cheap out, we are making sure everyone gets what they want.
Was weird but we moved on. We got two tastings Anne a soda for my DD friend. And my sister, who works in the alcohol industry was trying to explain the difference TO ME in abv between the “cider like” and “wine like” meads. And again, this woman who wasn’t even the one helping us said “uhm well actually these are nothing like beer. I just don’t want you assuming it will taste like beer”. Which no one did. My sister clarified she was talking about abv and the woman again chimed in “well a lot of things have abvs like beer, it doesn’t make them beer” with an eye roll. Both my friend and I shared a look, and it seemed like the man who was actually the one helping us got a little uncomfortable.
We ended up finishing the tasting and frankly the mead is ok, it was either too acidic or didn’t have much of a flavor and as someone who has had mead many places I just wasn’t impressed. But really the interactions with the woman is what made the experience so poor. I ended up buying my sister a bottle but I almost tried to talk her out of it’s hard to justify giving money to a business whose front facing team is so...
Read moreThis is Renaissance faire mead taken to a whole new level. I went for a tasting with a friend who bought a living social deal for the tasting. I was pleasantly surprised with their wines. First, even without the living social deal, the tasting was very affordable, is a taste of every wine they make and includes a souvenir glass. So i definitely would recommend anyone go in for a tasting at the least. Their wines included dry meads, which had a lot of complexity and depth that is more reminiscent of thoughtfully crafted grape wine varietals. They even suggest food pairings. (I really liked the peach semi-sweet.) Second, I thought for as excellent as the meads were, they were reasonably priced. They also have a membership program which gives a lifetime discount (definitely became a member). The owner is pretty cool, they do tours of the meadery and he's happy to show you around, and answer questions. I think this is an excellent contribution to the triangle's wine selection. I bought half a case on my first visit and will definitely be going back for more.
(on another note, the location is in this neat shopping area with refurbished historical buildings, some stores and restaurants - it would make a great afternoon to get dinner, do some shopping and...
Read moreI wish I could find the lady that recommended that I check out Starlight Meadery! I had such an amazing time here and at all of the spots around it. Starlight is a part of a larger co op that has a couple of restaurants, a distillery and cidery, a hemp store, and ax throwing spot.
I enjoyed the tour, tasting, and bird loving that I experienced at Starlight. As soon as you walk in you feel welcome and relaxed. The staff are super nice and knowledgeable and encourage you to ask questions. The tour upped my knowledge regarding the meadery process and the fact that they often get confused with a Winery, but they sometimes do use grapes in their wines--well just one.
I tried a flight of their wines and decided to get a bottle of their traditional semi sweet, which was super refreshing and not really too sweet. When you think of a mead one this is definitely what you think of. I can't wait to get this bottle home, chill it, and open it on my patio.
I definitely will be back and will encourage my friends to...
