A few years ago I was in Butte, MT for a day, and found myself going up an unusually steep street. Steep enough that I was worried my car might tip over backward. It got me curious and I did some research. I found out that many others had made lists of "the steepest" and I knew I had to look up a few. To my surprise, two of the consensus steepest were in Pittsburgh, a city I drive past at least a few times a year. This past week, I finally made the effort to stop and spend the night nearby and do some investigating.
I visited both Dornbush and Canton. Though Canton was closed due to some construction, I can safely say that it is crazily, insanely steep. So steep that walking up it is a significant challenge. The internet info says portions of it are a 37% grade, though on average it is somewhat less than that, keeping it from being "the steepest." Whatever, it's great and worth a diversion from my usual turnpike route to take a look.
I'm also happy report that, while driving around to navigate to Dornbush and Canton, I found myself driving on plenty of other absurdly steep streets. In fact, I'm convinced that the original road in Butte that started this whole thing is nothing special. Pittsburgh has hills (and other...
Read moreI hate to burst the bubble, but a lot of this has to do with promoting Beechview. I personally have driven and walked up 4 separate side streets that are definitely greater than 37%. These streets; however, are in what are considered much less prominent neighborhoods. So unfortunate, but so true that so much is based on affluence, politics and possibly pocket lining or the rich get richer, etc. I'm in no way making any accusations, just listing some of many reasons why some things get publicity and others don't. There are Four Steeper streets located in: North Side, Swissvale, Braddock and Duquesne. Message me for precise...
Read moreThe steepest street in the United States right near Pittsburgh. I came along this street while searching for places around the area to explore and I was not disappointed. I parked at the bottom across from some houses and the people didn't seem to mind. I'm sure their used to seeing people stop to check this street out. I then walked up the stairs to the top. There is a sign at the top as well as the bottom of the street explaining more about it. Driving up the street was a cool experience. I recommend stopping here it is a neat thing...
