Given all the attention this place has gotten over the years, including detailed stories in the Tampa Bay Times about the history of Parkesdale, we decided to give it a try. My son and I headed out on a Monday afternoon to get the famed strawberry shortcake and a strawberry shake over his spring break.
It is a bit of a drive from Tampa (30 to 45 minuted depending on I-4 traffic) and parking was in short supply, especially considering we were there at 4:00 pm on a Monday afternoon, but that speaks to the popularity of the place.
We got in line and ordered the regular strawberry shortcake and a strawberry shake. They were basically pre-made given the long lines. The strawberries had already been cut up and placed on the cake, they just added the mountain of whip cream on the top, then handed us a shake from the fridge.
We found a place in the seating area and tested the famed foods. The strawberry shortcake was okay, but not amazing. The cake started a bit dry, but within about 5 minutes it had turned into mush. The juices from the strawberries had mixed into the cake. The cake started to lose its consistency and eventually turned into a liquid. The strawberries were fine, but not amazing, and the whip cream was bland and flavorless. I'd give the strawberry shortcake a 2 out of 5.
The strawberry shake, on the other hand, was actually very flavorful. There were thick chunks of strawberry. The shake was thick and sweet - perhaps a little too sweet. But, overall, I'd say this is way better than any shake you'd get at McDonalds or Burger King. Solid 4 out of 5 on the shake.
The ambiance was fine. There were a lot of people there but it was still relatively quiet. It seemed like this was one of those things that people arrange to do as a tourist activity, but is probably not something people do all the time.
We looked briefly at the other produce on sale. It seemed fairly reasonably priced, but wasn't an amazing deal over what I could find at Publix or Sprouts, so we didn't bother. I was tempted to buy some preserves, but I make my own strawberry jam, so I opted not to.
Overall, my son was correct that he could experiment a few times and come up with a better strawberry shortcake recipe. The strawberry shortcake was mediocre. The shake was a solid win. We went. We probably won't go back. Interesting. Perhaps memorable. But not something we'll...

Read more4 stars for the food , not service .Visiting Family in plant city and couldn't pass up a chance to take my kids to have a taste of the “best” strawberry short cake in town . While i was in line i noticed everyone buying the strawberry milkshakes and thought , must be worth it, why not try it out and see. My luck , on the way to the table while trying to balance the tray, hold my one year old in one arm, and navigate my two year old, the shake dropped on the ground as soon as we reached the table. Surprisingly the guest sitting around us immediately jumped to assist and were so friendly and helpful . One man - a true gentlemen went to seek help from nearby staff, he requested a new shake for me. I was really surprised at how kind everyone was ; Unfortunately, the Supervisor /manager ( not sure of his title) was not as nice as the guest and seemed irritated with the man who requested another shake for me. The manager even refused to hand me my shake , maybe he was just having a bad day ( i am unsure) . Nonetheless, It was very awkward and he acted this way in front of all the guest , horrible customer service . Which was sad because everyone else was so kind . Despite the Managers sour attitude the short cake was good, my daughter loved it , BUt that Milkshake was what topped it all . OMG soooooooooo delicious !!! I absolutely loved it, I wish I could thank the guest who went out his way to help , He was such a light! As for the supervisor , I am disappointed and Unsure of why he treated me with such a condescending attitude , maybe he was just busy or had a bad day… whatever the reason , he needs...
