Some parks are known for a specific feature, this park has them all! This was my first time visiting, and I was surprised at the variety and excellence of activities available. I had arrived fully loaded, with both bicycles and kayaks, it proved to be a great idea! The lake is a beauty, fairly large at 800+ acres and with plenty of places to put boats large or small into the water. The lake is fairly open in the main basin but narrows to arms that are quite enjoyable to the paddler. I can not attest to the quality of the fishing, but there were certainly quite a number of anglers out trying their luck. That being said, the lake did not seem crowded in any way. There is a wonderful, curving bike path around the lake, dipping in and out of the tree cover and not only providing lovely views of the park, but an enjoyable ride as well. The park trail connects to a much longer trail that can take the determined rider all the way to Polk City. A return visit will definitely be needed, not just to enjoy the fantastic cycling and paddling but also for the disc golf and super clean swimming beach! This is a very accessible park for everyone, with enough features and activities to...
Read moreThis park is a few miles north of Polk city, Iowa. It offers over 5500 acres to enjoy and explore. Over 800 acres of man made lake here. Many shelters to reserve for gatherings or picnics. Plenty of parking available including handicapped spots. I stopped by here after hiking at Ledges. Big Creek is just "a little bit bigger ". You can really put on the miles here. The trail system here is awesome. The lake is too. I see many speed boats as well as pontoon boats. And watercraft too. Stand up paddle boats, tubing, kayak, canoe. All readily available and witnessed everytime I visit. Safe, clean place to visit and relax and celebrate life in. This place is huge. If you leave here disappointed then it's your fault. In my opinion of course. Check out the beach. Or trails. Or just wander around. Hunting is permitted in designated areas. There is a concession available only when seasonal. I have seen dogs here but they are supposed to leashed. Safe, clean park. Parking area well lit and patrolled. Despite how big this park is all the time I'm here I have yet to see or hear any negative things going on. It's great place for families and friends and...
Read moreImpressed! Been trying to go to as many different parks as possible with my dog - for a change in routine/scenery - implementing a hobby with physical and mental health benefits. All that to say this is my favorite park yet! It's huge!!! There's so many cute seating areas, paths, docks and more! Lots of fountains and restrooms! I noticed a trash was full, but saw no trash around. The bathroom I used was spotless. Saw DNR - which I appreciated, think this helps keeping the park up kept and safe. We checked out 3 different areas in 3 hours and I don't think we saw half the park. Will definitely return to check out the rest! Also had a Frisbee golf course which I haven't...
