The only reason I'm giving this five stars is how ridiculous this place is. But in a good way. I've only been here once but it was the funniest experience I've ever had. The owner makes covers for umbrellas and sings and dances for her customers. It's a museum full of umbrellas and singing and dancing. She talks about making all the umbrellas and history on them. She has a rated r room as well only for adults that contain umbrellas that are adult themed. It obviously has taken her several years on the hundreds she has. It's a fun place to check out on the island. There's no fee but you can donate towards the museum. The building is kinda crowded and small but it's clean. She's only open during summer hours. It's definitely a fun and uplifting place.
Google says it's located in Portland but it's an island off of Portland. To get to Peaks Island you have to take a ferry. You can take your car but there's a fee. Peaks Island is a small but busy island during summer season, it's a mini version of Portland. It's a nice getaway from mainland with several other shops and destinations.
Overall, 5 stars. Super fun place....
Read moreYes. You're right. "A museum for umbrella covers? How absurd!" BUT this was a highlight of my trip to Peaks Island.
The real star here is Nancy 3, the custodian of this collection! The point of her museum is to find wonder in the mundane and celebrate it.
However, Nancy 3 is all but mundane. She's a big personality on a little island. Be prepared to participate in her presentation and you'll be rewarded with prizes. She takes you through the history of how and why her museum came to be, she's got games to play, and even a performance at the end where she sings and plays her accordion.
You'll be subjected to a little Liberal ideology along the way but don't sweat it, Conservatives, it's Maine after all ... what else would you expect?
If you go to Peaks Island and you don't go here, you'll miss one of the Island's real treasures. Don't make that...
Read moreBe still my heart! There is not a better person more fit to have an Umbrella Cover Museum than Nancy as she is something like a real life Mary Poppins! She is the grandmother we always wanted, but never had! Out of all the countless stops my daughter and I had on our first ever trip to Maine, this museum by far both of our favorite! I love how she knows about each cover in her museum and takes the time to ensure customers get the best experience possible. Her unique "Umbrella Cover" song is one that will live in our hearts forever! I can only hope we are blessed to return to Maine every few years just so that we can stop by and see Nancy and her...
