We hiked the Hamms Gulch, Eagle Trail, and Lost Trail Loop in Windy Hill open space preserve. It is around an 8 mile moderate-level hike. We parked the car at the trailhead parking lot on Skyline boulevard. A portable restroom is available in the parking lot. The day we hiked was a foggy mystical day. Starting section was full of mist and clouds. Some parts were muddy, so be careful while crossing it. Very gradual ascent and descent. It is a less-trafficked trail. Dogs are allowed on the first section but only on a leash. There is a mountain lion warning for the second section of the trail where dogs are prohibited. Some parts of the trail are narrow. Trail is very well marked. 2 small sections where we need to walk on the road, so be careful and check for cars. There are few open parts that have excellent views of the bay and Palo alto; otherwise, most of the trail is covered. Overall, a nice green, quiet trail. We also enjoyed wildflowers along the trail.

I was hiking from the main parking lot of Windy Hill Open Space on July/29/2020. It is located at Portola rd. It leads me up to highway 35 to Windy Hill Summit and back down. It is a hard hike, 9 miles loops and about 1,600 ft elevation change. It was too hot and hard, since 65% of the trail exposed in the sun. I found this parking lot. It’s belong to Windy Hill Open Space too. But I can go hiking up and down to the Windy Hill Summit in a little over a mile. The Summit has amazing views of mountains, the city, and the bay. I highly recommend this place to everyone.

This is my favorite place to start the windy hill hike! If you go left, there’s a nice trail of rolling hills that brings you to the summit where you have an incredible view of the bay. If you go right, it takes you through a windy trail of forest and mushrooms to sun and views :)

This is a relatively small parking lot to the Windy Hill open space preserve. Like the main parking lot on Portola Rd, it also offers a restroom and is free to use, but also has fewer parking spaces available. I consider this lot as a good option for those who want to visit the nearby summit but are not in good shape to hike all the way up from...
