I LOVE this trail! This was a tranquil experience with so many moments to be in nature. I did Trail C and Trail A (Trail B is closed due to COVID restrictions). Trail A is no joke. There are signs that warn against doing the trail if you are low on water or not physically able (pay attention to those markers so that you know when to get off). Trail A took about 2.5 hours to complete. It is strenuous but the views are unmatched. At one point I was literally climbing over rocks and scaling a 40 ft cliff (don't worry, if you have balance and coordination it's safe). Older children can do this trail and it's a definite confidence booster when everyone completes it.

TIPS: If you do Trail A bring LOTS water (I went through two and a half 17 ounce bottles), wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes, and be prepared to HIKE. Wear a hat if you are sensitive to the sun because some parts are not shaded.

PARKING: The parking lot is small, however, most people park on the street. Many people parked on "no parking" streets with signs but their cars were unbothered (this was on a Saturday morning btw).

COVID observations: Currently, Trail A is one way. However, there are markers before the strenuous part of the trail begins and at the halfway point. There were some people wearing masks but there are many who did not. Social distancing is possible but that really depends on how many people are on the trail.

Overall, this was an incredible experience and I plan to return with my 11 year old niece to conquer the terrain again. Again, the views are BEAUTIFUL so do it even if...

This is where section A starts. No 5G along the trail only section near the end some signal. Free parking about 40-60 spots. About 30 mins from parking to this spot. On Oct 8, 2023, about 65 F long sleeve is needed if it is windy wear hoody shorts might be cold. If only for section A no need bring anything it only takes about 2 hours to complete. Ok to bring camera, no much steep climb. Some small flower along the way not too much, mushrooms as well very few. Do found a walnut tree, you can come in Sep when walnut can be harvested. There are several spot you can get down to/near the river, water is not that clean. Also some large flat area can be used for rest or lunch/snack. Those are mid or near the end. Pets are not allow in section A but allowed along the entrance, you can also bike there. Road is wide for about 2-3 bikes. You can come after some rainy day and you will see huge amount of water which is a different kind of scene. From entrance to exit it is one way traffic and not pets, but do see a few people and dog going in reverse direction, whole thing would take about 90 mins if no rest no pic taken. From parking to parking would take about 2 hours if no stops. Whole trail is covered for most parts, better to bring a second set of cloth as yours...

The Billy Goat Trail is one of the most scenic and rewarding walking and hiking paths in the DMV area. Located along the Potomac River, this trail offers a perfect mix of nature, exercise, and breathtaking views. No matter what season you visit, the beauty of the trail never disappoints. In the spring and summer, it's bursting with lush greenery and wildflowers; fall brings vibrant foliage that turns the path into a colorful wonderland; and even in winter, the trail has a quiet, serene charm that makes it just as enjoyable.

The trail is fairly long, especially if you explore all three sections (A, B, and C), offering different levels of difficulty and views along the way. Section A is the most challenging, with rock scrambling and steep climbs, perfect for adventurous hikers, while Sections B and C offer more moderate options that are equally scenic and peaceful.

One of the most impressive things about the Billy Goat Trail is how well-maintained it is. The paths are always clean, and despite its popularity, the trail never feels overcrowded. It’s a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and great for anyone who loves the outdoors. Highly recommend for solo walkers, couples, families, or friends looking for an...
