You will cross this bridge as we did taking route 3 from Augusta area enroute to Bar Harbor. We actually crossed this bridge for first time about 3 yrs ago. We also went up inside the tower to the observation floor. The bridge is an amazing site and very high off the river below. The construction amazed me as I was in the construction and design field before retirement. The towers are all native granite and the tallest in world that you can actually ride to the top in an elevator. I have gone up in the elevator to the observation deck and the elevator is very smooth riding and quite fast actually to that level. The views from the top are panoramic and amazing. The suspension cables are enormous in size to support this bridge. As you enter the tower, you will see a compass etched in the granite slabs outside the entrance. The craftsmanship of the etchings and the entire bridge structure are amazing! I feel this is a must see to drive across and go up the tower. There is a nominal charge to ride the elevator up the tower. When we went we paid to get into Fort Knox and the bridge tower at the...
Read moreThe tallest bridge observatory in the world, only the 2nd bridge built with this particular cable technology, and completed in just 3/3.5 years (as opposed to an average of 10 years for bridges of this scale & style). Located 16 miles south of Bangor, the observatory features beautiful 360° views of the lower Penobscot River, Verona Island, Town of Bucksport, Fort Knox, and the surrounding landscape. The granite used for various aspects of the structure was sourced from nearby Mosquito Mountain. The entrance to the observatory is combined with the entrance to Fort Knox (no, not the Fort Knox in Kentucky with all the gold... 😆), and as of October 28, 2019 the price per adult is $6 for Maine residents and $8 for out-of-state residents. This ticket is required to get on the elevator that takes you up to the observatory. Purchase of an entrance ticket also gives you access to Fort Knox. Please note that the observatory is open only from May 1st to October 31st. Definitely worth...
Read moreThank you, Google, for updating the hours for the bridge. Make sure to look for hours at the bridge observatory.
There is the bridge and the bridge OBSERVATORY. If you want CORRECT, up to date information for the observatory, look there. This is not it, even though many people are posting reviews for the observatory here. I did not notice the difference. The bridge itself is always open as it is public Rte 1! The bridge observatory has hours that are updated properly on Google. This has hours listed that are incorrect, if you are looking to make a side trip way out of your way to ride up to the observatory. They close at 5 during off season, not 6. I got here at 4:36, too late for the 4:30 cut off time. To say I'm massively disappointed is an...
