Charco Frío is a must visit is you’re trying to spend some quality time outdoors. There’s a parking lot outside the main trailhead which will cost you about $3/car and then you can walk towards the trailhead where you’ll be charged $2 to get in. The $5 you spend are well worth it! While hiking towards the river there were plenty of tours going on and if you want you can make friends with one of the tour guides along the way to get some insight on what spots you should check out. At the river entry point there will be a large pool and a place where you can jump or swing into the water. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can hike further into the river where you’ll be presented with beautiful waterfalls, forests, a natural water fall / slide! Lastly, in case you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you can jump from the top of rock beside the natural water slide. It is about a 20ft drop so don’t think twice about it once you’re on the edge - just pencil drop in and you’ll be fine! Some of the tour guides have their crew do it in case you...
Read moreA beautiful hike with a great swimming hole/rope swing at the end. The directions on Google Maps will take you to a parking lot where you pay a small fee to park in a dirt lot. The hike takes you by land up a ways, then then you walk up the river for a bit, then you follow a trail which ends at the main attraction. There are no signs or signage, so you must be comfortable asking people for directions. The payoff is amazing. If you're uncomfortable just going and figuring it out, there are local guides you can hire, but it is very doable on your own. Be careful if there was heavy rain recently. The river can rise to dangerous levels and the area is prone to flash flooding. A waterproof shoe is strongly advised. Don't do it in flip flops. Kids can handle it (my 5 year old did the hike and swimming), but they'd have to be the adventurous type. Expect to get VERY muddy. Bring towels, seat covers, a change of...
Read moreHiking up the river to the main recreation area (rope swing, water slide, minicliff jumping) from the first $5 lot will take about 1-2 hours. Worth it to experience pristine tropical nature and no crowds. Wear river shoes. Bring cash. If opting for the direct hike, be prepared to pay George a few books to traipse across his property. His land is a short distance uphill from the $5 lot. We hiked the first hour with our 6 and 8 year olds through the river, and then found a well worn trail out of the gorge that connected to the main trail, unknowingly bypassing George. Saw some cool fish, and a huge crayfish in the river. Lots of small swimming holes, boulders, and babbling waterfalls. The main area is super fun but expect larger groups of ecotourists. Our 8 year old was able to do the rope swing and water slide. The minicliff jumping was a...
