I recently visited the Benson Ford Shiphouse in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, and I was blown away. The shiphouse is a four-story vacation home that was once the forecastle of a huge cargo ship created for Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. It is now a breathtaking scenic getaway and a must see family attraction on any visit to the Lake Erie Islands.
The shiphouse is located on a cliff overlooking Lake Erie, and the views are simply stunning. You can see for miles in every direction, and the sunsets are amazing. The interior of the shiphouse is just as impressive as the exterior. The walls are made of reclaimed wood from the original ship, and the furnishings are all nautical themed. There is also a large deck with a hot tub, perfect for relaxing and taking in the views.
I would highly recommend the Benson Ford Shiphouse to anyone looking for a unique and memorable...
Read moreWe did the tour which was a fundraiser put on the historical society. We did our research prior to going so we knew a lot of the history and story of how the ship got there. I was disappointed that most of the staff did not know much about the building/ship. In their defense it was all volunteers. I think they could have done more to generate more revenue while creating a better experience for everyone. I would have paid more to get a guided tour talking about each room and it's original function and how the boat got to be what it is today. Also, a concession stand that offered beverages would have been nice since it's away from everything else on the island. The outside area would have been a great area for a beer or wine sampling area or something along those lines just to create a better experience for guests with proceeds going to the...
Read moreI only give this attraction one star as it is not actually an attraction. You can see the house from in Captain Alfred Parker Park. Fascinating to see either from the water or from the park. Very innovative however the city, played Hardball with them and screwed them over and will not allow them or permit to be a bed and breakfast. I guess it's because the owners of the ship house snuck it in literally on a 4th of July weekend. The city didn't like that and has made sure to take their Revenge. Of course they're not looking at loss of tax revenue due to another unique destination on the island. No they just want to be...
