Not Worth the Price – Disappointing Experience
I really don’t know what to make of this place. We paid $55 for our family (4 adults and one child — ages 17, 15, and 11), and for what it was, that price felt steep. The entire experience lasted less than 10 minutes. Honestly, it felt more like we stepped into a sauna than a butterfly exhibit. The greenhouse was extremely hot and humid — the windows were dripping with condensation — and the air was so thick it was uncomfortable.
To make matters worse, I only saw one butterfly actually flying. The rest, maybe half a dozen in total, were sitting up high on the metal frames against the glass, like they were trying to escape the heat themselves. I had expected a room filled with butterflies fluttering around, landing on flowers, maybe even on people — but that wasn’t the case at all.
Even my kids were disappointed. They managed a smile, but they were sweating and aggravated. They had pictured a magical experience, not something that felt like a hot, stuffy greenhouse with barely any butterflies in sight.
In my opinion, it just wasn’t worth it. I honestly see more butterflies on our own property trails than we did here. I considered asking for a refund or at least sharing my concerns with the front desk, but ultimately decided to just let it go.
To be fair, the gift shop was nice and the space itself has potential, but the butterfly exhibit was not impressive or memorable. It felt more like a commercial tourist trap — all hype, little substance. I’m not trying to be mean, just honest: if you’re hoping for a magical butterfly experience, this probably isn’t it.
I noticed the similar patterns. Everything is $55 . The putt putt next door is $55 which is was fine and for the time value. The cave thing is also $55 , which I rather done that, but other people was tell us they wasn’t impress , it small and it was ehh.. I know exactly...
Read moreI have consistently made it a point to visit the Butterfly House, not only to marvel at its beauty but also to provide support in any way possible, as butterflies have always held a special place in my life. Today marked my third and final visit. Upon recognizing that visitors are merely guests in the butterflies' home, it became apparent that some individuals genuinely comprehend this concept, while others do not. However, this disparity does not justify treating the latter group poorly. As we paid to visit I overheard an employee expressing a desire for a walking stick of a different height, this same employee explained by the coworkers that they are "sensitive" about the lack of respect some visitors display towards the butterflies. While I acknowledge their passion for butterflies, their "sensitivity" does not warrant making disparaging remarks. If the establishment and its employees feel compelled to defend or support their feelings, I suggest posting a sign with the comment "They live here, we don't," and sharing her name as a warning to those who she feels don’t care about the butterflies which would then provide a legitimate reason for her behavior. Especially over stating a fact that they love being by...
Read moreMy husband and children have never visited the islands on Lake Erie, Put-in-Bay was perfect for their first time. Our main point of interest was the Butterfly House. Easy to get to right off the ferry, I recommend using a golf cart to get there. The attraction sits amongst a slew if other fun things for the family. As the sun was hot, I was thankful for the shade as we parked! Bathrooms conveniently situated.
The front porch of the Butterfly House had a bunch of rocking chairs and benches, to rest your feet and enjoy the day. Inside us one of the most awesome giftshops, highly dedicated to butterflies obviously, but everyone could find a souvenir. While quaintly sized, this butterfly house was so active with these colorful insects, over 50 varieties! The staff waa so lovely and welcoming, and willing to answer EVERY 3 and 5 year old's questions. Looking forward to going back and sharing the other attractions another time.
(Please note: Touching the butterflies is highly discouraged as they may get harmed, however the little guy in the pic landed on my daughter and ate the salt from her hands. We had to enlist the guide to get the butterfly...
