It was very windy throughout the day (my husband recalled last time he hiked at ancient lakes in May 2018 it wasn’t as windy.) The trails are mostly flat, which is very pleasant to walk 90% of the time. However, there was one very steep slope covered with pebbles and rocks. It was kind of dangerous going down, because the surface was uneven and not stable. There were moments I felt I was going to literally roll down the hill, which is not so fun. I’m a little afraid of heights and clearly I wasn’t prepared for this. The trails were mostly under zero shades, so recommend to bring hats and wear sun protection. Overall it’s a beautiful hike. Highly recommended!

Great place for an easy backpacking trip. I took my partner out here for his first backpacking trip, and it wasn't too hard, and was a good place to try out our new backpacking gear. Some steep parts if you start from Upper trailhead (this one), but it'd be much flatter if you started from the other trailhead. The parking lot was small, but easy to get to from the main road. Beautiful place, and great "retreat" away from Western Washington -- it looks NOTHING like Western Washington. Plenty of campsites all over. The down side: the water sources are farm run-off, so I wouldn't even think it's necessarily safe filtered. We packed all of our water in.

Awesome hike. Plenty of spots for overnight backpackers. Beautiful scenery. It is fairly steep when going down into the area that the lakes are, but not overly difficult by any means. Also, being central Washington, be aware of rattlesnakes (how to hear/spot them and how to deal with an encounter), we heard one just off the trail on our way back only 15 minutes or so from the parking lot. Lastly, according to the WTA, the water in the lakes is unfit for consumption even after filtering because it is irrigation runoff (pesticides, etc.). Plan on bringing all your own water.

This was a beautiful hike and I loved the view of the lakes and waterfalls, and the surrounding desert. It was definitely difficult in some areas; steep and rocky, very easy to slip, and a section about 20 feet with brush rubbing against your legs. A lot of rocks and some holes that can be quite dangerous. I recommend bringing a friend, no little kids under 9 I would think, and have some good shoes, lots of water, and food. Also bring a pair of pants for the brush. I was left with a few irritated bumps on my legs from a section of the brush. But the view is truly beautiful and an...
