Did this hike in the morning for sunrise so we decided to come back out again later in the day and check out the sunset. Started from the Ancient Lakes Trailhead Southgate and hiked down past Judith Pool and towards Ancient Lakes. Earlier in the day we got some nice views but this time we actually ended up going to the very top and getting some amazing views. There isn't really a trail and once you start gaining some elevation the loose rock can get dangerous. Passed 4 people on the trail and saw some people camping down by the lake with their fires going as well. Round trip was 3.64 miles and 554 feet elevation gain. Gotta love Eastern Washington!

Beautiful scenery once you get into the area with waterfalls. There are several waterfalls, varying from a trickle to a small creek falling about fifteen into a pool. The trail we followed isn't a challenge for experienced hikers, but parts are on past landslides covered in layers of rock shattered into flat pieces. The combination of the slope and loose rocks requires a certain amount of leg strength and agility to cross without painful falls onto the stones. These sections add an enjoyable amount of challenge for fit people who don't have much experience hiking.

This is a beautiful area tucked in the heart of Quincy with beautiful scenery! Drop toilet available in the camping areas which are free! Some nice spots, even right on lake. Beware, there are leaches in the water so going for a swim isn't recommended but it's great for paddle boarding, just don't fall in!

Just a disgraceful dirty waste heap. Why they don't provide dumpsters or trash receptacles of any kind kind of baffles me. Have been there probably 2 dozen times. Ive never seen a fish and wildlife officer or any kind of maintenance person. I was there today( on a Friday) and the bathroom toilets were literally piled up to the top of the toilets. Then people just stack their trash in and around the outhouses. Garbage is strewn all over the place. There's an old torn up tent in one spot thats been there since I've been going there 2 yrs ago. Oh and if you're asking yourself why i don't clean up some of it is because i have a job and...

I used to come here all the time as a kid. Things have changed, I don't remember there being so much trash. Someone left an entire shade structure at one of my favorite campsites. Broken glass. And the TP flowers! Come on ladies, it's not that hard to stick it in a Ziploc bag and empty it when you get home.

We saw tons of birds, from ravens to white pelicans to herons and cormorants. A gopher snake, a bunch of jack rabbits. A family of quails. Some bull frogs. And--unfortunately--a dead juvenile rattler by the South gate entrance.

Everyone should visit this place at least once. Just please pack...
