This location is very close to the freeway and open until dusk. It costs $10 to visit and there is a kiosk so you don't have to have cash.
I found the petrified wood to be remarkably colorful and to have a great deal of texture. It's beautiful to look at the pieces that are scattered all over the area.
I was unable to visit the inside of the state park because of the hour I arrived. It looks like a very good area to learn more about how the petrified wood came to be in this area. It looked interesting enough through the glass that we will try and come back.
In addition to the quite spectacular quantity of petrified wood, the view looking over the Columbia River is equally as amazing with a brief description of the ice related floods that scoured the Columbia River gorge.

Read moreThis place is a real gem 💎. You won’t be disappointed with a stop here. These petrified specimens are over 15 million years old, and an incredible glimpse into the past. A great road side stop along route to other adventures, or a worthwhile end destination itself. If you are able to visit the museum, you’ll get an incredible view of tons of specimens, and larger displays of the geologic processes at play.
There’s also a series of petroglyphs down the side trail, behind the museum, and are the most impressive in WA I’ve seen yet.
You won’t be disappointed by stopping here, a true national treasure and glimpse into the worlds before our time.

We visited Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park while traveling with my wife and some family, and it ended up being one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. The views are absolutely stunning with wide open landscapes and unique geological formations that are unlike anything we’d seen before.
We explored on our own and loved the freedom to take it all in at our own pace. The staff struck the perfect balance of really helpful and friendly without ever being overbearing.
The interpretive center was well worth the visit too. The video and the displays of petrified wood were fascinating, and we all came away learning something new.
