So you're driving along Eastbound I-90 out in the middle of Washington, asking yourself, "Where have i ended up? What IS this land?" because folks, central Washington is weird! But it's such a cool weird, you can't get enough. Is it desert? Prairie? Then comes the sensory rush of Vantage, WA. Drink it in, because it's real alright. I had a freakout when i hit this place. So stunningly beautiful! You would be doing yourself and all travel companions some serious injustice were you to drive past the Wild Horses Monument without stopping just to take a look at that horizon! And the rustic, simple beauty of the horses leaves one speechless when they do the talking for and to you. It simply has to be a stop on anyone's journey if they really want to feel the awesome power and grandeur of America in the goosebump inducing Wild Horses Monument viewing area. And if you want to see the horses up close, be alerted that it is a steeper climb than it looks once you get about a third of the way up, so make sure you're in fairly good shape and are wearing a decent pair of tennis shoes! Even if that climb is not on the menu, there's more than a feast with the absolutely breathtaking views from this place. It is a memory that will stand out...
Read moreA great place to stop for a break. Always plenty of parking available, and nicely maintained (do NOT expect a restroom - you can find a complete rest stop with facilities a couple miles further west.) The views are great from the parking lot, and even nicer from the hilltop. Countless folks have walked up the unofficial trails leading to the horses, though I wouldn't be surprised to see a rattlesnake, I never have. Unfortunately a few folks armed with spray paint and white markers have felt it their right to deface the artwork. (A sad commentary on the lack of respect for the rights of others. One wonders how "understanding" these same folks would be if someone "tagged" their car while they were busy defacing the artwork? After all, its all about free speech and love, right?) Still a great place to stop. If you are lucky, a jet fighter from the nearby Air Force Base may fly low over the river while...
Read moreReally cool wild horses made out of metal on the top of a hill on the side of interstate 90 you can hike up a fairly short but somewhat steep hill that takes you right up close and personal with the meticulously welded and crafted depiction of a group of wild horses galloping through the country side a picture in time of what used to be. The man who created this beautiful artwork comes to the monument at least once a year to clean off all of the graffiti and fix the etchings people put into the metal so please respect his artwork and do not vandalize or spray paint the art work this man put years of work into this sculpture for...
