Directly accessed from the Reedy Creek Parkway parking lot (Harrison Avenue Entrance). Lot can hold maybe 75 cars. This lot fills super quick and this gate is even opened before 8 am on most days. Usually notice cross country teams and running clubs at the lot. Bathrooms, picnic area, and a picnic shelter are here at the lot. Trailhead with signage at the picnic area. Papers maps too.
This is a 5.8 miles loop. Moderate with a deceiving bit of elevation change, all gradual. Trail has a TON of roots and rocks. Expect unevenness. It is however, wide and well worn. Expect a lot of traffic and I bet this is the most trafficked hiking trail in Umstead based on observation alone. Trail runs along Crabtree Creek for a small section and the highlight seems to be the remnants of an old mill along the creek. The trail intersects Inspiration Trail, Reedy Creek Lake M.U.T., and connects to the Sycamore Trail via the Company Mill Spur moving north.
I find this trail rather ordinary and there are much better trails for scenery in other state parks. It is however a good trail to deal with the pounding of rocks and roots and for speed workouts for both runners and hikers.
I tend to start my hike at the aforementioned lot, begin with this trail, connect to Sycamore Trail and loop back to the lot. This way I get both of the largest trails...
Read moreCompany Mill Trail at Umstead State Park offered a fantastic blend of challenge and natural beauty, making it a memorable hike. The trail keeps things interesting with rolling hills, sections of moderate elevation gain, and diverse terrain - from smooth paths to rocky sections. The dense forest canopy provides shade and a peaceful escape from the city. You'll encounter plenty of birdsong and diverse plant life. Whether you're looking for a leisurely walk or a more strenuous hike, the trail offers options for different fitness levels. The length (around 6 miles) allows for a good workout without being overwhelming. While the trail crosses some creeks and runs alongside a waterway, there are no waterfalls or major water features. If you're looking for a hike with more aquatic elements, this might not be your top choice.
Park early on weekends and holidays to avoid...
Read moreI was wondering why it’s called company mill trail until I saw the millstone. There was an actual mill. You can see some remains of it in form of mostly stones. It about 6 mile trail. We did about half. Our little one needs to grow up a little to walk anything more than 5 miles unless it’s Disney. Trail is easy with little bit of ups and downs. Trail has small rocks and roots so be careful how and where you put your feet. Reedy creek is nice and half the trail is next to the creek. Plenty of parking and restrooms. Saw a blue heron catch a fish...
