Trails are beautiful and well maintained. I hiked up to Davies Pond which was very nice. It was good spot to set up a hammock, eat lunch, and read a book. If it’s your first time, make sure you follow the marked trail (blue squares). The trail shown on google maps is the old layout. The trail has since been re-routed and google has not been updated. The old path still exists, but there is not longer a bridge across the creek. If it’s dry, you can cross the creek and get back on the main trail. Moderately hilly, but the switchbacks make hiking pretty easy. People walk their dogs and run on this trail. You will still hear I-40, but I’d still say that you’ll find yourself immersed in nature. Maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention but I ended up walking in circles 3 times before I figured it out. Haha. There's some cool stuff off trail for the people wanting to explore, but honestly... this seems like more of a trail running trail. It's on the longer side of the trails in Umstead. I liked it ok, but my kids hated this trail. At least with a mountain, if we hike a couple hours, there's a mountain view at the end. Here, your reward is a little lake and more trail. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and the humidity. Be careful at that first river crossing, the stone slabs are slippery and can catch you off guard so don't jump. It was fun a some areas seem secluded if you want to pause and take in the serenity. There are a few benches at intervals for those who need a little rest....
