Well-preserved location, almost exactly as FDR left it. Museum was packed full of memorabilia, very educational and exciting to get close enough to touch (although numerous signs politely instruct you NOT to touch), but it's great when everything isn't covered by glass so you can enjoy all the small details. The park rangers were all wonderfully friendly AND helpful. FYI, they do not have tour groups or guides, but you can roam freely on the grounds, from building to building, at your own leisure. Very inexpensive too, only $12 per adult (even less for special age brackets). Cozy gift shop has everything from clothing, soaps, and food items to toys, books, and posters for all ages. Don't miss the short video at the front of the museum (theater entrance is toward the left). It provides a succinct introduction to the history behind this small but significant piece of American history, narrated by Walter Cronkite. And when you first enter the actual "Little White House," be sure to find the inscription handwritten on the wall shortly after FDR's passing (now protected under plastic) -- very touching. The actual springs and pool that FDR swam in while staying in Warm Springs are at a separate location, a ways down the road from his residence. Unfortunately, the pool and museum there are currently closed, undergoing extensive renovations, so call ahead before planning...
Read moreThe Little White House Historic Site in Warm Springs, Georgia, remains one of my favorite historic stops and continues to impress every time I visit. I had been there before, but on this return trip I was reminded how well this site preserves not only President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s memory but also the spirit of an entire era. The museum at the entrance is beautifully arranged and tells the story of FDR’s life with care and clarity—covering his struggle with polio, his time in Warm Springs, the Great Depression, the New Deal, and his years of leadership through some of America’s hardest times. The displays blend photos, artifacts, and storytelling that bring history to life without feeling overdone. The staff were outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about sharing FDR’s legacy. The grounds and buildings are immaculately maintained, giving you a real sense of stepping back in time. It’s easy to imagine Roosevelt himself finding comfort and strength here among the pine trees and quiet hills. The Little White House is a deeply informative and moving experience, a place that connects visitors to both the man and the moment that shaped...
Read moreMy wife and I were driving to Destin FL, and on the way we noticed the small brown historical sign for Warm Springs. So on a whim we decided to swing off the main road and go visit. We are so glad we did! The details of the site have been well reviewed below, so I won't repeat that. We also visited the original hospital which is deserted now, the old brick quadrangle designed to look like the quadrangle at the University of Virginia. Most particularly it has an alcove in the back right, where there are busts and and an explanatory plaque, of all the persons, starting in the 1800s, responsible for leading up to the effective polio vaccines. It is well worth it too. We particularly want to emphasize the warm friendliness and expertise of the persons working there, who are all older with a prior career and who work there for the park service because they love it. I cannot recommend them highly enough including the older gentleman whom you first meet when you walk in, and then the 2 women who directed us where to look and gave us background about any little detail. Their knowledge is wide and deep. Highly...
