Willa Cather Childhood Home — Attraction in Red Cloud

Nicely done, but could be so much more. No activities for children. Guide was pleasant and knowledgeable, but when asked deeper questions, we didn't feel she knew or was reticent to answer. Red cloud needs to become a destination, not a stop for people. Visit Madora, ND or Desmit, SD for inspiration and design & build an adventure for families. As for structures, make a couple great instead of many mediocre. Put a period rail car in front of the depot. Have reenactors put on shows in the opera house on weekends (give her graduation speech). It was closed. A small sign had directions to the Opera House where you could go to arrange for a tour of the inside. I had expected it to be open for specific hours as stated on their website. This was May 1, 2021 during the Covid pandemic. I enjoyed walking around the property but decided not to pursue things further due to my own time constraints. This pretty little town is quite peaceful and laid back. Plenty of interesting old architecture. None of it polished or grand. It appears to be a food desert as well.
