Nestled in the heart of Smith Rock State Park, Asterisk Observatory attracts seasoned stargazers and casual observers alike. From the moment of arrival, guests are met with warmth and welcomeness. Whether staying in the lovely, modern guesthouse or camping on-site among the trees and the deer, every visitor is led to feel free to make themselves at home on the property.
Cassie was an extraordinary guide, cultivating an atmosphere of excitement in the daytime through her clear and genuine passion. She openly shared her professional wisdom in the lead-up to the scheduled guided experience and made sure everyone felt welcome and included in the space. She also gave great information about the Smith Rock area and encouraged guests to explore the park and its incredible hikes, sights, and climbs.
The viewing experience was amazing. We were fortunate enough to have clear skies with great viewing conditions. Through the observatory’s 17-inch telescope, which itself was a technical marvel, guests had the opportunity to see some truly incredible wonders of the cosmos. Cassie selected excellent targets for the telescope to bring down to Earth, from nebulae to star clusters to planets in the Solar System and more. When the telescope experience had ended, guests were able to lie out on a viewing platform and gaze up at the Milky Way (which I myself spent hours doing).
We were also able and privileged to learn about Dark Sky Oregon, Dark Sky International, and the general importance of maintaining dark skies and reducing light pollution. The heartbreaking truth is that an overwhelming majority of Americans do not get the opportunity to see even a portion of the splendor of the skies revealed in the absence of overwhelming city lights. Oregon is unique in its preservation of dark sky areas, ensuring the sights here are absolutely can’t-miss.
If I returned to visit Asterisk Observatory tomorrow, it still wouldn’t be soon enough. I plan to visit annually at the very least, but inquirers should jump on the opportunity of a reservation as soon as possible because this gem will become increasingly popular year after year and season after season. I’m already planning for next time!
Thank you, Cassie, for this spectacular visit...
Read moreFabulous! Enchanting! Celestial! We loved our visit to the Asterisk Observatory and its charming guest house, The Spot at Smith Ranch. Cassie, the astronomer/presenter, wowed us with her observatory and her presentation of the night sky. As the roof slid back from the top of the observatory, the giant telescope reared up to take in the sky. Cassie is a born teacher who gave our intimate group of five an overview of the telescope and the way it functions as well as the celestial objects we were observing, from stars and nebulae to planets....*go Saturn! After the presentation, we spent time on the viewing deck to take in the milky way and the vibrant sparkling sky. When the chill set in, we went back to the guest house, changed into bathing suits, and soaked in the hot tub for another hour of celestial enchantment. The guest house was very clean, contemporary, and at the same time had a down-to-earth, rustic quality that matched the environment. We barely knew anyone else was staying there. The next morning, we made breakfast in the well-equipped kitchen and after checking out, were able to leave our car in the parking lot while we hiked for the rest of the day at Smith Rock. If you are able to secure a spot, go for it!! You will be...
Read moreThis was an amazing and unique opportunity! Smith Rock State Park is a gem unto itself. Having the opportunity to spend the night and view celestial objects through a telescope is quite special. Our host, Cassie, was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Her professional background in astronomy provided for a great guided tour of the night sky. We loved scanning the sky for objects as close as the moon and galaxies far, far away. The property was very comfortable. I would give this review so many more stars, because that's exactly what we got to see (literally millions in the M13 Hercules cluster!) A truly memorable experience! Thank...
