What could Jack have done at this State Park!?!
On days he wanted to relax, he could sit in a swing and read a book, or grab his binoculars and watch the wildlife. It's so peaceful around the lake.
Then, he could take the 1-mile walk on the Swamp Bay Nature Trail, or walk around the beautiful lake and grounds.
There are grills all over where he could fix some lunch, or he could check the Office for a snack or something to drink.
If the kids come along, there are several playgrounds to work off some energy, while the adults get a workout on the outdoor exercise equipment. Two of the pieces of exercise equipment are wheelchair accessible, not commonly found in parks.
At times when he brought his wife and kids, they could all play a round on the 18-hole miniature golf course; or maybe he would play 18 holes at Brazell's Creek Golf Course, or just hit a bucket of balls on the driving range.
The occasions when they wanted to stay for a few days, the options start from simple tent campsites, to sites with hookups for a camper or motorhome. Some of the campsite views are extraordinary. My favorite is #24.
For a more cushy stay, there are numerous cottages of different sizes that can provide a comfortable and homie atmosphere.
When there is a friendly gathering among friends, he could reserve a Shelter, or for a huge family reunion, the Group Shelter is an excellent place to entertain. There is plenty of space and it has a fireplace and restrooms inside. The Group Shelter has a separate building to cook on gas grills.
Don't forget to bring your small boat (electric motors only), or rent a boat, kayak or aquacycle at the office to cruise around the 12-acre lake or to do some fishing. You can also rent bicycles.
A sign is posted that a new ADA pier will be installed in the near future. Overall, much has been done to accommodate the handicapped, so they can come and enjoy the park, as well.
Jack Hill was a lifelong resident of Reidsville and did a lot for his community. Thirty-three of his years were served in the Georgia Air National Guard. He was the longest serving Georgia state senator at the time of his death.
He was also responsible for many of the improvements and expansion of this park, and he would be proud that the name was changed after his passing in 2020 to honor his accomplishments. The previous name was Gordonia-Altamaha State Park, for the nearby River and the nearly extinct Gordonia tree that grows here.
Stop by the Office and pick up a memento of your visit. There is a nice selection of items for everyone. Lisa was very friendly and provided some good information. (ask her about the special Christmas Treeπ)

Β Β Β Read moreNice small park, I'm not sure if they are improving or declining. On the good side they have some nice ideas like an outdoor fitness area, some very nice playgrounds that they were replacing the mulch to keep them nice, cool geocaching, petal boats to rent and they are building new cabins. The lake is small but nice, the water lilies along the edge were flowing so it was quite beautiful.
The not so nice is that the mini golf looks like it was nice and one point and it has good bones, but it really needs to be resurfaced and the drainage fixed and a couple good coats of paint. The nature trail is just a path on the backside of the camping area, a backyard trail. There aren't any other trails for hiking. They had a certified butterfly pollinators garden area that was really just an empty raised bed of sandy soil.
We stayed in one of the cabins for the weekend and it had some minor problems that should have been fixed, both light bulbs on the back porch were out and one of the cabinets was only hanging on by one hinge, but instead of taking a screwdriver and fixing it, it was closed so you couldn't tell until you opened it.
The cabin we stayed in was very handicapped accessible with a ramp, roll in shower, and handicapped friendly kitchen set up. Outside the cabin had a standard small charcoal grill with a picnic table, a fire pit with a nice bench swing that looks like the supports had been recently replaced.
There is some old oak trees with Spanish moss, some magnolia, and of course, lots of pine.
Overall it's a nice place and I'm adding it to my list of places I'd like to...
Β Β Β Read moreMy husband and I camped from June 20-22 and had a great, relaxing time. (We just got home π). The Splash Pad stayed busy with children having a fun time. The golf course was very busy as what seemed to be a tournament going on, and several people took advantage of the fishing opportunity. The two of us just enjoyed the quiet, peacefulness of the beautiful nature that surrounded us!
We stayed in site 17 which had a good bit of shade. This site is right across from the bathhouse and laundry facility. Each site has a fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Gravel is in each site and this helped cut down on sand being tracked in the camper. This site (17) is one of many with full hookup, but they do have some that aren't full hookup. They have a few pull thru sites and also handicapped site(s) with a paved pad rather than gravel. We used the bathhouse several times and each time it was very clean.
Our camp-host, Johnny Watts, was very friendly and helpful. He has worked hard to make sure everyone has what they need as well as keeping the campground nice, near, and very clean. Thank you so much Mr Watts for the job you're doing! We will definitely be back and we recommend this park to everyone who wants to kick...
