This is an amazing outcropping of layers of the John Day lava flows in the Pleistocene era. More than 62 lava flows overran this area millions of years ago. The magma hot spot that is now under Yellowstone was under this part of Oregon and then the contintal mass pushed slowly westward over millennia while the hot spot remained stationary.
