This is a pretty state park, very tranquil, not overly crowded. To get to the trail just go into the campground entrance and drive down as far as you can until you see a lot right before the area that requires a permit. Then just walk down the road past the campgrounds and you will come across the trail head. There are markers along the way so you know how far you have gone. There is only one 2.5 mile trail here, and it is flanked by two bodies of water, so bug spray isn't a bad idea for this park.

Overall, the park and campgrounds are EXCELLENT! The historic canal, however, has been neglected and is impassable even to canoes. Agricultural runoff has nearly filled the canal with sediment, and fallen trees are obstacles to any recreational use of the importance waterway. The entire canal -- from Independence Dam to the "Canal Falls" dam East of Florida, Ohio, should be cleaned out and dredged. Once improved, it will again be a valuable recreational and historic asset!

Independence Dam State Park is located on the banks of the Maumee State Scenic River and offers great views of the river and Independence Dam. It is a long narrow park with picnic shelters, hiking trails and primitive campgrounds. There are remnants of Ohio's canals at the entrance of the park. Independence Dam State Park is on the Buckeye Trail. It was quiet the day we were there without too many visitors and we had a very relaxing visit.
