My wife and I had visited here many years ago when dating but never went on the tour in the spectacular estate building itself - just went to enjoy the nature and the timing did not match up when we just went to enjoy the beautiful grounds. We have long been married now and went back when the estate was open with tours and it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
First be aware they have somewhat limited hours for the tours and the building is otherwise locked, so check their website before you go to make sure they are open for tours. The tours are guided and you cannot wander through the building alone - you must keep up with the group. Photos are not allowed but they do have postcards is the gift shop (which is only open when the building is open). The office to buy tickets are in a different building off to one side.
The main building is very misleading even from the photos on their website - there are 40 (yes, FORTY) bedrooms. The tour takes about 45 minutes. As it is kept 100% as it was when a private home, their is no handicapped access to the upper floors. Additionally, if you need to leave the tour early, an attendant is sent to the group to collect you and escort you out of the building and re-lock the door (when you go in for the tour they lock the door behind you). The tours are scheduled.
My wife was unable to do the whole tour so we did call back later to see if she could come back to walk through alone and the answer was unfortunately, no. However, they were very attentive and called us back twice to discuss the situation, excellent customer service.
Not only is the entire park outside kept immaculately maintained, the inside which is fully furnished with valuable works of art and original and antique furniture, is in magnificent shape. It is a beautiful historic property and very well worth the visit. Very impressive - and very well managed and run.
The tour guide is very well first in the history of the place and the history of the family that live there, so there are stories about several of the rooms to give it a personal well-educated touch. There are actually very many bathrooms is well, and that is unheard of back when this building was...
Read moreThis review is for Sheppard pond. I was here last summer on a weekday and it is quiet, pristine and had a wonderful time at the beach and rowing the boat. But my visit here this summer on a weekend was an epic fail. This once quiet getaway becomes the ghetto of Sunset Park, Brooklyn with the crowd of a building staircase during a fire. Your ears will be deafened by endless bachata, salsa and worse of all reggaeton noise. In this simple beach where a beach towel, an umbrella and a sandwich will suffice for a relaxing time in the sun, you will see a mad rush of everyone stressing themselves into a hypertension state fighting for a spot, setting up foldable chairs and tables and for some unknown reason an 8 person tent, blinding smoke from their mandatory grilling of tasteless, charred meats with screaming from parents to reluctant kids "your hot dogs ready!". This park was not made for this amount of people no matter how many people can fit in your car. So on weekends, you will not find parking guaranteed. You will see a holes with NY plates cutting in front of you, stealing your parking space and when peering into their parked car, you see an open bottle of whiskey next to the transmission. Yes Im talking about you blue minivan. So imagine a quaint, tiny beach in the highlands of NJ, away from all interstate highways by 10s of miles... you will imagine a small bathroom as well right? Imagine what this bathroom look like on weekends. At what mindset must you have to poop on the floor and on the toilet rim but not in the toilet? Check out the womens bathroom on the side entrance and...
Read moreAstounding. An English manor/garden feel in the Northern reaches of New Jersey (almost NY!). You can drive by pretty easily, so when you see the sign turn off! It may not look like an access road but it is. You cross a quaint bridge and pass a guard house. There is an art center and other buildings, nothing was open at this time (Saturday night 6pm). Plenty... of parking in the first lot you encounter which is next to various manor houses and the entrance to the garden. There are a ton of trials - some are gravel/marked, some just meandering sections of open field/grass. The garden is beautiful and seems to have nice age to it. You could hang out here all day and be happy! I did not get to as much as I would have liked but just walking the grounds was a pleasure. There was perhaps 5 other cars in the lot and I only saw a small group of people the entire time I was there... definitely coming back with more...
