The trails can entrances can be a little confusing. However, this is a very nice park with a mix of everything - from forest hiking, to camping, to picnics, to just a casual stroll with your dog or sitting on a bench with a friend.
The buildings are interesting to look at, and they do a great job of mowing the wide lawns. On the western side of the park, Ringwood Manor, the Ringwood Mill Pond is really beautiful. We parked near Ringwood Manor.
We got a map, asked the staff how to access the Red Trail for the eastern hiking trails (Cupsaw Mountain, Shepherd Lake, Governor Mountain) but after trying to find the start of the trail, we gave up because it seems like you have to exit the park and walk north and then cross Sloatsburg Rd. There weren't any signs either.
That would be my main complaint - lack of clear signage. We decided to head back into the park, near the manor, for the white trail. After seeing a sign saying "White Trail", we walked forward on the road, thinking that it was ahead. However, this led to camping sites. We went back to the sign, and realized that there was a small trailhead marking on a tree that said to turn left. The sign itself had a trailhead start marking, but could also easily mistaken for "go forward." Leaves had covered the trail so it wasn't very evident either.
The white trail definitely needed maintenance -- lots of trees trunks blocked the way. There were many confusing forks in the trail, where the trail itself is supposed to be straightforward and one path. Just keep on checking for trailhead markers; they did a great job of having frequent markers, but the markers were white and not super visible. Once you get to the Blue Trail, though, the path widens. Just still be wary of the trail blazes/markers. There's also a stream that runs through the Blue trail so just be careful.
Sally's Pond is nice, too. Ringwood Manor area also has bathrooms; that's a plus. This review is getting long, but overall a good place for a...
Read moreOne of my go to spots to relax in northern NJ. When you are first going into the park I recommend staying in your car and driving around for a bit to get the full experience. Make sure you drive past the picnic tables and toward the back of the park along the river to where the high voltage power lines are. Then I recommend going and parking next to the main manor house. They offer tours of the house, and although I have not gone in a while I remember how nice it was the last time I went. It was amazing to see how much history this area has. After going through the house and surrounding house grounds you should probably take a walk down to the lake area because that is always really nice. After doing that you can wither go for a nice hike along the blue trail, or get in your car and drive over to the picnic area parking lot. Here you should get out and walk along the river, and over to the weir. Overall I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a nice evening out or just a nice picnic in a...
