Mishe Mokwa is one of the best trails in the Santa Monica mountain, there is a range of easy to difficult paths to take on the same trail. I have walked 10 miles on this trail due to detours and of course sightseeing. It is friendly to dogs, so this is why I give it five stars because not as many trails in the Santa Monica mountains are. Once you are at the top you can see incredible views of the water and the San Fernando valley below. Some of the trail is not cleared completely so be careful, because there can be big rocks in the way but easy to scale. In the fall and spring it can be very green, but in the summer it can get really hot to around 90 degrees. Bring plenty of water. You will hike where there is the forest of trees (but not a true forest) and desert like landscapes, lots of hills and steep climbing in some areas. I would suggest going with a second person since emergency services are far off and you may not have reception. The portable toilet is usually in good condition but not always. Be safe...
Read moreUp in the mountains above Malibu Springs, the roads leading to this trail are full of hair pin bends and steep drops. My advice is take it slow. We were lucky in that we were visiting out of season and during the week.
When we arrived, we parked in the Sandstone Peak Trailhead Parking Lot. It was fairly empty with only a couple of other cars.
The trail has a few options. Two of them are either trek to the Sandstone Peak or you can do the full loop of the Mische Mowka Trail. The full trail requires a commitment of approximately 3-4 hours. It covers a distance of approximately 9 kilometres. We found the trial on the AllTrails App and used this as a guide whilst we were doing the hike.
Quite a lot of the trail is up and down hill. Some areas start to become a slight rock climb. When we visited in November until we reached Sandstone Peak we only saw two other couples doing the walk. There are some spectacular views of the Santa Monica Mountains and...
Read moreModerately difficult hike in the sun. Not too many shady spots until you go down to split rock. Absolutely gorgeous views! Faster way to sandstone peak that the sandstone peak trailhead parking. I recommend getting there early for good parking. Absolutely beautiful views of the Pacific ocean, Camarillo, Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Malibu, and all the mountain ranges around. On a clear day you can see 2 of the Channel Islands: Anacapa island and Santa Barbara island. I went here with a hiking class as our final. It was amazing. There are also areas to rock climb over by balance rock. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners unless you're up for a challenge or you were blessed in the ways of fitness lol I highly recommend it if you're looking for a new trail...
