A must see when you're visiting the Northern Sacramento or Capitan mountains. Lincoln, like Tombstone, Arizona and Dodge City, Kansas has obviously been painstakingly made into a stop into time. In fact, I would say historically speaking, the people who are in charge of each building are a treasure trove of information. You can't see the old west without seeing Lincoln, New Mexico. In the late 1870's when politics, corporate competition, and old world biases came together that split this little town in half during the Lincoln County Wars. Not to mention the most famous jailbreak in the history of the Old West. The old Lincoln County Courthouse, the site where William Bonney, alias The Kid, later called Billy the Kid made the single handed escape, and the bloodstains of that day and the ghosts of some of the most famous people in the old West can still be seen and welcomed by the residents who call Lincoln County home. Even if you are not a history buff, when you walk through each building and hear the amazing stories, you will be amazed and you can't stop the hair from standing up when you see the unbelievable things in Lincoln. We have all seen the movies about Lincoln, but this is one of those view places in history that is so complex, so unbelievable, that hollywood 's version doesn't do the real...

I was really impressed by the friendly and knowledgeable staff, first-rate displays, and the informative, well-made documentary. There were more items of interest than I could possibly take in during a single visit, so I came back the next day. Along with all the other well-annotated displays at the many other interesting locations which make up the greater Lincoln Historic Site, there was still way more information of interest than I could properly process during my visits. This may very well be out-of-the-question, but here's an idea: with the proper planning and focus, someone with a steady hand, a decent smartphone camera and a reasonable idea of how to photograph each item and its description could, over the course of a single workday, conceivably create a Facebook page making all the information available for site visitors' further reference. Perhaps there are reasons I'm not aware of which make this suggestion unfeasible. Either way, I couldn't have enjoyed my time at the Visitor Center and the other sites connected with the Lincoln Historic Site more. Many thanks to the good people involved with sharing Lincoln and its history with...

I had mixed feelings about one of the exhibits in the main museum. The portion that represents the history of the Apache and any Native peoples their voice needs to be present. If they were included in the making of that exhibit, it was not obvious at all. We aren't looking to reassure ourselves about a bloody part of history, but we need to be inclusive of the voices of descendants and bring awareness from their perspective.

Overall, the museum was well done representing the different facets of Lincoln with Native, Military, Settler, and Spanish influences and spends a significant amount of time focusing on Billy the Kid. I can't say the knowing the entire town was really geared toward Billy the Kid that I would have visited, but in the end, it was a nice museum.

$7 allows you to tour the entire town, $10 includes Fort Stanton, which is not far away and is...

Enjoyed this little piece of history. Lincoln NM preserved mostly as it would have appeared in the 1880s. Lincoln County War, the Regulators, and Billy the Kid history here. Start at the visitors center and pay the small fee (happened to be a free day when we were here), tour the museum there, then walk through town with your map (your ticket into the open buildings) and enjoy. The old Lincoln Co courthouse with descriptions of Billy's escape at the locations within. Tunstall Store essentially as it was with authentic displays and merchandise. Most of the buildings appear as they did historically. Nice people manning the displays too. There is even a small brewery in the middle of town with great craft beers. Again in a mostly authentic looking building with outside seating and a small good truck.

First a concern, my wife and I brought a ticket and donated and no one asked us for one. I bring this up because I don't want the site to close. Other than that, we were planning to spend an hour tops and ended up at about 3 hours, we even met a local who was just the friendliest man imaginable outside the post office (he's originally from Chicago too) and then several more residents who just made us feel absolutely welcome. Eventually we had to move on, but everyone we ran into was so nice and helpful it actually made leaving the town pretty hard. I know this is supposed to be about Billy and the history... but it's not, it's about the town itself now, and honestly I've never been to a place that welcoming. Everyone you meet is so nice that it's a town you feel guilty about leaving.

I love the town of Lincoln, NM. Quaint walk back in time when Billy The Kid roamed the streets. Pretty authentic. There are not many side hustles there. But the historical surroundings is a great way to share history and the fabric of NM. Come armed with your own books and maps about the area. Hikes and homes that are truly NM’s history. Just wish the town would repair the dwellings that are left behind. Some are crumbling. Lincoln is an out of the way place and most small businesses can’t survive. But the town does not help much to preserve the landscape. But it truly is a piece of the old west without the hype. Opposite of Tombstone AZ. You can feel the history of Lincoln. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a walk back in time!
