So who is Drake and why do we care so much about his seat that this is a typical stop on all island tours of St. Thomas? Well many locals say this is the look out that Sir Francis Drake used to spy on enemy Spanish ships in the 1600's. Others say he never set foot on St. Thomas, and this landmark was given the name "Drakes Seat" in the early 1900's by philanthropist Arthur Fairchild (one time head of the NYSE) because he thought it was cool.
I think it's a neat detour on the North side of St. Thomas to take in breezy views of Tortola and the rest of the British Virgin Islands, while sipping on a Loco Coco from John the Coconut Man! Now you're wondering of what a Loco Coco is. Well its a 1/4 bottle of Cruzan rum dumped into a freshly macheted coconut for $10. The volume of drink you get is equivalent to two or three rounds of cocktails making this a pretty good deal for happy hour on the island.
Yup there are no open container laws on this island, and parking lines are just a guideline that you cant expect to be followed. Wednesdays and Thursdays (the most cruise ships are in town) are when the car situation can get cray cray up here, so don't be afraid to be creative with your parking.
Look both ways before crossing the street if you decide to sit on Drakes seat. I've seen a lot of close calls, and nope, pedestrians don't have the right of way here.
All in all I wouldn't go out of my way to get here, but luckily for most of you its a stop on the way to the majority of the interesting parts of the north side...
Read moreI have a very special request from anyone visiting drakes seat!!!! My boyfriend and I visited St Thomas in April of 2019. While we were there we spent a lot of time at Drakes Seat because the amazing breathtaking view and it was so close to the place we rented for the week. While we were there , we picked a coconut from a palm tree and engraved our names and where we were from on it. I left it by a tree next to the bench (drakes seat). IT WOULD MEAN THE ABSOLUTE WORLD TO ME IF SOMEONE COULD CHECK TO SEE IF IT IS STILL THERE FOR US! . I have been telling him since we left that I wish we brought the coconut back home with us but because our luggage was too heavy already we couldn’t fit it so I left it there hoping maybe it would start a tradition for people who travel there and want to leave their mark. I know it sounds silly but again if anyone could please look for it while your there , it would mean more than you know! I’m even willing to pay to have it shipped to me if someone would be so kind to get it to us. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. St. Thomas was so much more than we expected and the most special trip we...
