In the area for a wedding, and had the pleasure of visiting the Montgomery Store. Thoroughly enjoyed talking with the store owner at lunch & was so excited for the evening bluegrass music! What a gem for this community! The gathering was such special fellowship. Old time songs from our childhood, invites to sing along, the best hand-dipped ice cream! But then.... We attended during an election. 😔 One of the singers chose to speak divisive politics rather than just play & sing. As if that wasn't bad enough -- the person went on to say he had no use for anyone differing from his opinion. The sense of community evaporated. The gathering turned quickly from one of inclusion & a shared love of bluegrass to menacing division. We chose to leave -- not because we agreed or disagreed. We left because, in a world of hatred & divisiveness, we couldn't even escape it here. Americana. Values. None of that mattered. The heart of bluegrass & what it represents. What it gives.
