The Smashburger Fries appetizer at Fat Mack’s Grill in Gold Hill, NC is nothing short of phenomenal! Imagine a classic Smashburger (minus the bun), chopped up and layered over a bed of golden fries—already delicious, right? But the magic happens with their signature Mack’s sauce melted into the cheese. The tangy crunch of the pickles comes through perfectly, tying all the flavors together in a way that’s downright addictive. This dish blew past our expectations—it’s the kind of appetizer that makes you want to come back just for another round. We enjoyed it as a late afternoon snack with soft drinks on the back porch, and the fact that our golden retrievers could join us made it even better. Gold Hill itself is a hidden gem. Quaint, charming, and full of history from North Carolina’s gold mining days, it feels like one of those small mountain towns that somehow stayed off the main tourist path. The town’s historic relics and preserved spots are well worth exploring. If you’re anywhere near Gold Hill, do yourself a favor and stop at Fat Mack’s Grill. The menu is packed with tempting options, the prices are more than reasonable, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Trust me—you’ll be glad you made the trip!

No wait when we arrived so food was quick, they even had games to play while you wait which was nice and the service was fantastic by our waitress. Although the food…I could cry. My family ordered 3 smash burgers, well because that’s what they’re suppose to be know for. Like other reviews, the patties were smashed to a crisp, burnt, no flavor. I’ve worked in the service industry for 10 plus years and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable serving these smash burgers. We complained my husband’s burger with a couple bites missing and we were still made to pay full price despite giving the food back to the waitress. I got the “steak” Philly you know with the fake steak brand everyone uses. Hard to mess up so it was good but VERY greasy. My two year old is not a picky eater and he just opted for the fries. Sorry Fat Macks we really tried to support your small business :(

We were able to sit at the bar and be served right away even though the restaurant was crowded right after church let out. Our server was friendly and checked on us multiple times during our visit. This is great, laid-back place to pop in for a smashburger and wings, loaded fries, or a steak on the weekend. We did not have to wait very long for our food and it came out hot and fresh. We will definitely be back!

I and my guest came for dinner tonight to try Fat Mack’s Grill. I got the fish special (which was supposed to include shrimp and a fish filet) and my guest had the cheeseburger quesadilla. Unfortunately, the fish was not made fresh and seemed to come out of a frozen package (like Gordon’s) and the shrimp didn’t even resemble fried shrimp, like they were smashed and then deep fried to extreme toughness. The cheeseburger quesadilla was fine, and we ate that, but both sides of fries tasted off like they were sat in oil for a long time. The waitress seemed to be extremely busy bouncing back and forth across the restaurant but did not come back to our table to refill drinks or ask how the food was. We waited for a while as I wanted to exchange the food I did not eat for something else but was unable to for the reason above. We finally just grabbed our ticket and went to the front to pay; when we were checking out, I let the waitress know that I did not enjoy the food and she said “Sorry, I should have warned you that not many people like that (the fish special). If you don’t have confidence in your food, then don’t serve it. I’ll be back at a later date to...

Went 2nd week of opening. I had a chicken quesadilla and fries. Husband had something called frychos. It was just ok. Chicken had no taste other than the grill and my fries were greasy. How can they already be like that? Husband said his was just ok as well. We never got drink refills and they have Pepsi now instead of Coke. All the windows have plastic on them, the shades are down, and it was cold in there. We had to wait for the guy in the kitchen to come out to the front so we could pay. When we asked for the bill we were told it’s at the front. We never got a bill so we had to wait to be rung up to see what we were charged. They only have 10 tables inside as they are using the sunroom for storage🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️. I read the reviews from their food truck so we figured we would give it a try. They don’t have beer which doesn’t matter to me. There were a couple people walk out because of this. Sorry but we are a one and done there. I was hoping for them to follow in the other restaurants footsteps with good food, but it hasn’t happened. 2 miles from our house won’t even make it better. Good luck. It’s gonna take a lot to make me go back...
