I do not recommend hiking this in the summer. If you must, come here very early and hike in the morning as early as possible. In mid June it was already quite hot. There is also basically zero shade anywhere on this trail apart from the occasional large boulders and big trees. Of the hundreds of trails I've hiked, none of them had fly and insect issues except for this one. There have got to be thousands up on thousands of horseflies, flying ants, and other insects all over this mountain. It was beyond annoying having to swat them away as they would fly around your face. And I mean it - the flies are around you for the ENTIRE duration of the hike, up and down. At the top of the mountain is where it gets really bad - there's this concrete pole thing that had HUNDREDS of these flying insects all crowded up and if you got too close they would come and sit all over your head. One of the most annoying hiking experiences ever.

The views are great, though. The trail itself is only 3-4 miles long round trip, and there's plenty of parking at the campground (you can park there with a $10...

This trail offers a moderate level short hike. It's two miles to the top, and the views are great. A few years back, there was a fire that incinerated all the trees and vegetation, so shade is limited, especially if you go during the afternoon. Notheless, as you make your way to the top, you see mother nature at work with new pine, california oaks, manzanita trees all in regrowth. The trail is rocky, so be prepared and take all your hiking essentials, especially water. Once on top, you will be rewarded with views of the surrounding mountains and the Anza Borrego desert. You can also see the extent of the fire that swept through this park a few years back with dead trees still standing, but new trees growing under that....

We went up to this location to do the hike for a company outing. The weather was perfect because we started at 8 AM. The earlier you start the better because the sun can be quite hot in June in July. There’s good shade along the trail due to the vegetation, which is nice. When you get towards the topic gets more exposed and the sun can beat down on you. The nice part about it being exposed is that you get better winds up there. There are no dogs allowed. Bring a good amount of water because there’s no water on trail.
