This is a beautiful place to view the Bay area regardless of the area being home to, many of the city's unhoused RV and residentially used vehicles. You may be a bit surprised or even feel like you are possibly in danger when taken aback by the sheer volume of unhoused individuals parked in the area but so long as you follow common sense safety precautions you are no more at risk of being a victim of crime than anywhere else in the City by the Bay. For example, only visit during daylight hours, don't bring valuables or leave valuables in your vehicle, lock your vehicle, for extra layer you could always attach a note to your inside car window stating (no valuables in vehicle), carry a phone with enough charge for your stay so if you need to phone emergency services you can, be kind to people but don't allow people to get you to follow them, have a buddy with you and politely reject any suspicious individuals who wish to spark up a conversation or sell you something, also let friends/family know where you and your buddy will be hiking and don't stray from that path. If at anytime you feel unsafe, begin making your way to the closest populated area while on the phone with police. Don't give strangers a ride. If you are approached by a person panhandling it is usually better to politely decline as donating to any organization is typically the better way to use your funds to help. This area of the city is in need of attention not only from city officials but also by people supporting the economy of small businesses nearby and supporters of public spaces utilizing them as this area is underutilized by the general population. If you feel a person is in need of help that is currently experiencing homelessness or a mental health crisis it's best to call SF's 311 line rather than the police as law enforcement are not trained in interventions of this sort and the right professional will be dispatched through 311. Remember that there are no water fountains so bring your own water and pack in/pack out any trash as not to add to any waste...
Read moreToday, it was beautiful, green with yellow wildflowers. Hawks, egrets, buffleheads, squirrels and birds. A few people here and there enjoying the day. It was peaceful. The access is closed off on both ends of the road leading around the Candlestick Park stadium area because of the homeless encampments that grew out of control. The encampments have been removed I saw today but here and there are noticeable artifacts left behind, a few carpets, glass, some odds and ends by the road, but not much. So you will need to park in the parking lot across from the newer condos close to 101 and walk in. It looks like there was a bit of vandalism over the last year or so and the restrooms are not open. Some of the small bridges are falling apart and in need of repair. There was a port-o-let though at the end by the fishing pier. So it is a little spooky as its desolate. But its a stunning area and I'm sure the Hunters Point folks are looking forward to it being revitalized and they can once again enjoy their park. Its a shame its in such a state, I am sure the residents in the area really had to push to get it developed in the first place to the beautiful open space it is and to see it falling apart was sad. But regardless of this brief moment of disrepair, its really something. And in a way, the fact that you can't drive into it makes it remarkable because its sort of wild and remote and clean inside. Hundreds of bulbs have been planted and work on the fallen trees from this last storm are being removed. Though the area where the stadium was is a total eyesore, as are the barriers, its easy to be turned off to it but really I highly recommend a visit or a short walk. The park is beautiful, the views are amazing. You really...
Read moreWell the picnic event I went to was a birthday party for a famous drummer chapito from the group Santana that part was awesome far as the park goes it's a little difficult to get to on the weekends as there's a park before you get there where people Park on both sides of the street in the middle of the road kind of like a street party for a ball field. That has nothing to do with the spark of course but once you get to the park it looks like it's closed it's at the end of a closed Road when you pull in there's barriers the grass is burned it is on the shore there are picnic tables and amenities but the bathrooms are closed I have a nasty porta potty the ranger drives around the whole time and his truck on the shore and lets everyone know that the gates close at 5:00 so right about the time your party is starting to really have a good time you get told you have to leave or your vehicle will be locked inside. My tip is to park outside the gate that way when they lock the gates you don't have to leave they don't kick people out of the park they just...
