In the heydays, this area was popular due to the mineral springs, which lead to construction of bath houses. This area became a health resort from 1892 to 1902 due to the benefits of the waters, relieving stomach troubles, rheumatism, and malarial afflictions.
From the information plaque: Mineral Springs Grotto The mineral springs located in this area have played an important role in the story and development of the park. Between 1891 and 1902, the Parks Commission began developing the park, highlighting the springs. During this period, over 20 different sprints were identified, including sulfur, magnesia, and naturally carbonated soda springs. To protect the identity of the different springs, tunnels were dug into the hillsides and craftsmen were brought in to build grottos and fonts that were found in the area. I came here to do a mountain bike with Elder Romney. It was so much fun too. I love this park as a place to escape the noisy of San Jose! I am respected the way the protect this historic park for future generations!...
