This tour is apparently the most popular wildlife refuge tour in the country. If you're interested in the local wildlife and ecology its actually very interesting and informative.
In our trip the tram wasn't too full leaving plenty of space. The trams have roofs so you are protected from the sun and the tour guide has a microphone so it's easy to hear him and you can focus on the nature.
Most of the tour consisted on commentary about the local plants and water but we did also see some animals (not too many unfortunately)
The visitor's center has a lot of informative information and a gift shop. I would look for the duck sculptures in there because they are beautiful.
Another note: they have sunscreen dispensers there in case you forgot. I didn't use them so I cannot comment on the quality.
(Spoilers ahead!)
Talked quite a bit about keystone species like the mangroves which are hugely important to many species in the environment. Also talked about some of the interesting tree crab species that eat mangrove leaves leaving the leaf husks to fall into the water below providing essential nutrients for the water life. The rest was about the estuaries, topography (its flat.) and some information about the indigenous tribes that used to occupy...
Read moreHello everyone, May you be inspired to also pack up the littles, along with the queen of your life and get the sound track of the trip set up and head to Sanibel/Captiva Island. It was a slow day so we just headed that way. By the time we got to the bridge the day had taken on a new sheen. Our spirits were lifted considerably. We drove from one end to the other and bybthe time we got to the Dairy Queen we decided to load up with goodies, get our sound track qued up (our tunes for the tour) we were now ready to head back out. With music as lovely as the scenery outside our windows we struck out. And as we traveled through that beautiful place we did it to Pat Metheny, Enya, Clannad, Andreas Vollenweider, an the queen, Joni Mitchell. So all I can say is that we were renewed and I was so thankful that I was able to share/spend that time with my queen. I truly envy the people who get the chance to call that place home. We must fight to ensure that places like Sanibel/Captiva are always kept just the way they are, truly...
Read moreOur guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. The tour is long enough where you feel like you are getting your money's worth. The tram was a little difficult for our senior LO, with mobility issues to get up and down the steep steps of the tram, but the tram is equipped with a wheelchair lift. If you have someone with mobility issues, you can purchase your tram ticket, and then park by the tram (hopefully) We went in mid December, which was fantastic! The gift shop and info center is a wonderful place to get a map of Sanibel, and pictures of the birds you'll see. It has clean bathrooms, a ramp, and a wheelchair elevator. The staff were very friendly and can answer many questions. You can also drive through yourself,...
