One of the most historic and popular sports in Santa Cruz. The lighthouse beacon light serves as warning to sailers and a museum honoring surfing and surfers. There’s a large lawn for activities, a restroom close by and terrific views of the Wharf and The Boardwalk. If you care to stroll the pathways take you for miles in several directions. It’s a beautiful leisure walk. The weather in this area can change so bring a hoodie, preferably a Sana Cruz red dot. Parking is free along the roadway.

Ode to surfers who have crossed over forevermore on the great wave. Seeing the waves crash along the cliffs is mesmerizing and also terrifying. Watching fearless free spirits ride wave after wave is like a live action extreme sport movie. But definitely not a sport for the faint of heart. Also unless very experienced, these shores are not for you. It can be deadly even for the veterans. Best to sign up for some lessons by the pier and where the breaks are less severe…

Simply one of the best right-hand waves in the world. This area is the birthplace of surfing in the US and also has a very cool small surfing museum. The area has a nice “cold-surfing” vibe, with pines instead of palm trees and the coldest waters I’ve been to in California. There are a lot of seals playing in the water and also many surfers enjoy this beach that comes close to perfection.

Steamer Lane is an iconic surfing spot in Santa Cruz with breathtaking ocean views and incredible waves. When we passed by, we were amazed to see so many surfers—both amateur and professional—riding the waves in this beautiful setting. It’s a true treat to watch the skill, energy, and passion of the surfing community while enjoying the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

I’m so grateful that this experience is free to enjoy, whether you’re here to learn from the surfers, take photos, or simply soak in the scenery. There’s also a Surfing Museum nearby, although it was closed during my visit—another reason to come back! If you love the ocean, surfing culture, or just want to be inspired by nature and sport, Steamer Lane is...

Legendary surf spot and perfect place to visit for all kinds of reasons, in all seasons, and generally an awesome place to be. The weather tends to be nicer than surrounding areas, and the walk on Westcliff from Cowells to Natural Bridges rivals La Jolla and ranks among my favorite destinations in Norcal. Steamers specifically is in basically between the lighthouse on the point and the Surfer Statue overlook, with entry at both points, but the standouts are located off the point also accessible by tow-in when the waves are right. This is a very crowded lineup, but it's also worth it to visit or surf one of the most culturally significant, popular spots in the world; Steamers is the true and original surf capital...
